The MIGP Stars Arrive in Dubai Dubai: It's ‘Mission Accepted' for the Dubai International Film Festival (Diff) as the world's media descended on the city for the launch of arguably the biggest film of the year.
More than 1,100 industry professionals and hundreds of international journalists, photographers, television crews and presenters will be fighting for spots on the busiest red carpet Diff has ever experienced tonight when Tom Cruise and his fellow cast members Paula Patton, Simon Pegg and Anil Kapoor, along with director Brad Bird and producer Bryan Burk, launch Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol. A large proportion of the film was shot in Dubai, and more specifically at the Burj Khalifa — the world's tallest building.
All praise
And while fan screenings, red carpets and promotional pictures have been captured over the past week in Tokyo, Seoul, Sydney and Mumbai on the film's international publicity tour, the official world premiere of the movie takes place in Dubai tonight. Cruise will be on the red carpet from 5pm — an hour ahead of the other stars — just to spend time with fans.
Gulf News caught up with the stars when they landed in the UAE yesterday. Although Cruise was unavailable until a press conference which takes place this morning, his fellow cast members had only good things to say about Hollywood's leading man.
Raising the bar
"He's an inspiration," said a bubbly Patton. "He is the most hard-working man I've ever met. Just when you think you are tired, there's Tom," she added throwing her hands in the air. "Working out. There's a reason he's one of the greatest actors of all time."
On his death-defying stunts hanging from the Burj Khalifa, actor Simon Pegg — who is returning for a second stint with Cruise in the franchise — said it was something Cruise had been building up to.
"He keeps raising the bar and then leaping over it," said Pegg from under a green cap. "He has high standards and it raises everyone's game. These were stunts he has been building up to. I don't know how you can top it, but he'll find a way."
Indian actor Anil Kapoor, of Slumdog Millionaire fame, was grateful to Cruise for reasons other than the fourth instalment in the MI franchise.
"Tom has restored a colour in India since his visit last week," he said.
"He brought excitement, energy and reminded us all the Taj Mahal is there," he said.
"You can become complacent when things are on your doorstep and seeing someone like Tom Cruise in utter awe of such a place jogs your memory about how lucky you are." SOURCE

MTV in Dubai for MIGP Fact: Tom Cruise likes to make things difficult*. Upon reading the script for "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" and seeing that there was an intense action scene that would require Ethan Hunt to repel from a skyscraper, I can only imagine his response to director Brad Bird was: "This is perfect. No thanks, I won't require a stuntman. Oh, and P.S., can you make that building I have to climb the tallest one in the world? You know, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai? Cool, thanks!"
Seeing that Mr. Cruise really likes to make things difficult*, one has to fly halfway around the globe just to interview the man, as the international press junket for the latest "Mission" installment is being held in Dubai, where entertainment journalists will be reminded that yes, Tom Cruise repelled the outer walls of the Burj Khalifa, the building you are in right now and yes, it's just another reminder of why you are inadequate when compared to Tom Cruise.
Basically, our trip has been just like "Sex and the City 2," except replace the four sexually adventurous female protagonists with two hairy nerds (I never saw "SATC 2," but I'm guessing Carrie and Samantha didn't reference "Robocop" several times during their travels). After an 11-hour transatlantic flight and a marathon of over-ripened movies from early summer (surprisingly overlooked? "Source Code." And no, I wasn't misty eyed during "The Help," it was the change in cabin pressure. It's science, you guys), we finally arrived in the Persian Gulf earlier this week.
When "love" could not justify Alvy Singer's feelings for Annie Hall, he invented the word "lurve." Perhaps a better writer could describe Dubai's beauty, but for now I'll chalk it up to the ineffable because 1) there wouldn't be enough time to describe all of its wonder and splendor, 2) you probably have Google (you're reading this on the Internet...but I'm only speculating) and 3) we have important work to do: INTERVIEW THE S--T OUT OF TOM CRUISE. And also, hopefully, geek out a little bit when costar Simon Pegg approaches.
Stay tuned for tomorrow for MTV News: Protocol: Ghost Protocol!

The Quest for Cruise in Dubai Producers log, day two: The quest to interview Tom Cruise continues.
The premiere of "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" is set to kick off this year's Dubai International Film Festival. Being the investigative journalists that we are, MTV News reporter Josh Horowitz and I suspected that the stars of said film would be in Dubai to promote their movie — and we were so right. But interviewing the "MI:4" stars wouldn't be until tomorrow, so we decided to get the most of this once in a lifetime cultural experience
Yes, that was probably all the sun Josh needed. So we headed to the Dubai Mall, which is the largest mall in the world. Much like your grandparents, we spent the afternoon strolling through the mall. After passing by the ice rink, aquarium, and indoor Sonic the Hedgehog theme park, we were exhausted. To unwind from the adventure, we decided to head 124 floors up to the top of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, and also where some of the more spectacular scenes of the film were shot. We needed to get into the mindset of the stars before we interview them — it's called "method journalism."
Much to our chagrin, they would not allow us to repel from the top-floor observatory.
In a few short hours and with many pastries still to come, we will finally come face to face with our target. Consider this "Mission: Sorta Almost There."
