Empire's M:I Cover Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is out on December 26. Empire: Magazine - December Issue, meanwhile, is out on October 27. It won't self-destruct, although it may go a bit curly at the edges if you leave it in the damp.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol hits theaters Dec. 21, the fourth installment of the Tom Cruise spy series. Brad Bird, left, directs. Impossible marks the return of one of Hollywood's most popular franchises. The series has done $530 million domestically and another $1.4 billion worldwide. Director Brad Bird, a Pixar veteran, says he chose Protocol because he was struggling with another live-action feature, the historical epic 1906, due Dec. 12. "I wanted (a movie) that was gassed up and on the runway," Bird says. Josh Holloway of Lost appears in this scene. Bird, at far right, discusses a scene with Simon Pegg, left, Paula Patton, Jeremy Renner and Cruise. In Protocol, the IMF is shut down when it is implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin. "One of the biggest successes of the last Mission: Impossible was that it dealt more with the characters' personal feelings," Bird says. "I like that." Though Bird says he has always been a fan of the psychological components in the movies of J.J. Abrams, who produces Protocol, he didn't want to give up pyrotechnics. "We're not doing a Pinter play," he says. "There's a lot of action." Several scenes of Protocol were shot in IMAX, and the movie will open a week early on IMAX screens. "It's important that the first people who see it talk about it," Bird says. "So you want the presentation to be special." Patton, Pegg and Renner are all newcomers to the franchise. Bird says that Cruise, as he often does, insisted on doing many of his own stunts, including dangling from the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest structure. "That man is dogged about acting," Bird says. "He loves the movies every bit as much as I do." Renner, above with Paual Patton, knows a thing or two about stunts, having starred in the 2008 war film The Hurt Locker. Cruise drew a camera-toting crowd wherever he went, a spectacle that annoyed Bird at first but became a welcome sight. "Hey, at least (people) will know that's not a special effect. That's really Tom hanging there." While the Mission: Impossible franchise has been big on home video, Bird says the franchise is meant for theater-viewing, one of the reasons he shot partially in IMAX. "I want some showmanship in my movies," he says. "And you gotta go big in the movies. I want a screen the size of Cleveland." Bird says he briefly considered working on a superhero film, but felt so many had been done that he wouldn't make a splash with one. "Tom and I had been talking about a project together for a while," Bird says. "He says he saw The Incredibles and wanted to work on something. How do you turn that down?" Mission's team element has always been a draw for Bird. In Protocol, "they're cut off from the rest of the world and aren't sure who to trust. That psychological tension ups the ante." SOURCE
