NBC Firms Up Plans for a TV Version of John Grisham's The Firm
Looking for some good ratings counsel, NBC is turning to John Grisham's The Firm. The network is in talks to pick up a new series based on the best-selling legal thriller, which was also the basis of a 1993 movie starring Tom Cruise.
Lukas Reiter (The Forgotten, Law & Order) is adapting the book for TV and wrote the pilot script. The Firm has actually been in development for some time, originally at CBS. More recently, Reiter and Grisham, who are both executive producing, pitched The Firm to several cable networks.
Instead, production company eOne Entertainment decided to green light the drama with Sony (which will air the show overseas on its AXN channel) and produce 22 episodes. In the U.S., eOne is expected to sell the show to NBC, which leads the pack to land rights to purchase the domestic window to The Firm. (ABC was also believed to be in the running.) .. 'Top Gun' Back on the Big Screen for 25th Anniversary
When Top Gun hits the screens this weekend, a lot will have changed in the 25 years since the film was first released. When Top Gun first hit the big screen in the spring of 1986, Tom Cruise was a still rising star, Val Kilmer had yet to hit it big and Anthony Edwards was best known as a nerd named Gilbert. Other future stars, such as Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan, were also still trying to find their Hollywood stride. These yet to be known stars showed the world what they could do, and the proof came in the form of box office success.
The film was released May 16, 1986, to critical reactions by big names such as Roger Ebert but the viewing public quickly turned the film into the highest grossing movie of the year. By the time all was said and done, this film had produced $353,816,701 in the worldwide box office. The home sales of Top Gun also hit records by becoming the greatest selling VHS of all time. That trend continued 18 years later when it was released on DVD.
AMC is banking that this trend will continue this weekend with the re-release Top Gun at hundreds of theaters across the country. Each participating theater will have two showings of this iconic film. The first will be on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with the second showing coming Monday, May 2, at 7 p.m. While supplies last, each audience member will also receive a free theater-sized commemorative poster.
Fan reactions to this release range from one extreme to another. Many fans are excited to see one of their favorite films return to the big screen. Others are excited to take friends and family who have never had the chance to see this movie. Many others have much cooler reactions, though. Grace Shreve of Atlanta may have summed this up the best when she said "I love the film Top Gun, but I don't think I'd make a special trip to the theater to see it, since I have it on DVD."

#whatstrending: The best movie soundtrack
Sunday - 5/1/2011, WTOP's Neal Augenstein and Nathan Hager discuss their favorite movie soundtracks.
WASHINGTON - The Tom Cruise flyboy classic "Top Gun" is (was) back in theaters this (last) weekend only for its 25th anniversary, and it's bringing back a lot of memories.
For us, those memories include playing the soundtrack in the car until the tape wore out.
Listen to the opening riff from Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone," and tell us it doesn't put you right back in the cockpit with Maverick and Goose.

Top Gun Remembered
San Diego celebrates the 25th anniversary of the filming of the Tom Cruise film.
It was on May 16, 1986, that the famed movie "Top Gun" was released in theaters and brought worldwide attention to San Diego and the then-Naval Air Station at Miramar, now MCAS Miramar and home of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Several parts of the film were shot in San Diego and at the Navy's Top Gun fighter pilot training school which was located at the base for many years before moving to Nevada when the base was re-assigned to the Marines.
The film told the story of a cocky Navy fighter pilot -- call sign "Maverick" and played by Tom Cruise -- and was filmed in and around San Diego. Interior scenes were all filmed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger docked at North Island. Exteriors for the movie proved to be a tourism boost for San Diego, as the old lighthouse below the Cabrillo Monument made an appearance in the film, as well as a home in Oceanside where a scene with Cruise and co-star Kelly McGillis was shot.
The movie also brought fame to the Kansas City BBQ restaurant in downtown San Diego, where the film's infamous bar scene was shot. Kansas City BBQ was marking the 25th anniversary of the movie with non-stop showings of the film. Despite a fire at the restaurant three years ago, Kansas City BBQ downtown remains a popular spot for tourists and residents and still displays memorabilia from "Top Gun" filmed there 25 years ago. Here's the famous scene from inside.

'Minority Report' Semantic Display Tech Gets Huge Cash Infusion
May 17, 2011
Ready for digital billboards that notice you need new sneakers as you wander by? That comment on your waistline and discreetly recommend gym time?
Ready or not, they're coming, and Viennese company uma just scored $1.1 million in funding from multiple investors to make it so.
Uma recently demonstrated technology dubbed “SKIN” that interacts with passerby. You know those chatty flat-screens that badgered Tom Cruise in Minority Report? Like that, or an “interactive multimedia installation that reacts to people.” The technology can track people using 3D cameras, and interact with users carrying RFID (radio frequency ID) or NFC (near field communication) technology.
“I have looked at the future of display systems, and it is clearly based on semantic technology, which can feed information to users based on their preferences, or other external, relevant events,” said newly appointed board member Henrich Schuster. “uma is taking the industry into new directions, and I am pleased to be part of its growth.”
But will we be pleased to find ourselves besieged by public devices that reach out to us like email spam, only without junk filters or delete buttons?

Stanley Kubrick: Visionary Filmmaker Collection Blu-ray Review
HeyUGuys.co.uk
Seven films by Stanley Kubrick make up this new Blu-ray boxset, two new to the format and each one a challenging and intriguing work of art.
The quality of the films are not in doubt and if you found your way here then there’s a fair chance you know Kubrick’s work so I won’t waste your time on a cursory summary of each, instead I’ll give you an idea of my struggle with the new collection which comprises the later films in the director’s career: A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut , Full Metal Jacket, Lolita and Barry Lyndon.
It’s been an exhausting week and a half taking in the seven films and as many extras as I could manage; these are not films to have on in the background when other tasks are carried out. They demand (and reward) your complete attention. »

'The Firm' Makes Its Debut On Blu-ray May 29
May 28th, 2011 In "The Firm," based on the best-selling novel by John Grisham, Mitch McDeer (Tom Cruise) is a young man from a poor Southern family who has struggled through Harvard Law School to graduate fifth in his class. Mitch is entertaining offers from major firms in New York and Chicago, but when Memphis-based Bendini, Lambert, & Locke offer him a 20 percent higher salary than the best offer he's received, in addition to an enticing variety of perks and fringe benefits, he decides to sign on and remain in the South.
Mitch's wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn), warns him that the deal sounds almost too good to be true, but it's not until after several weeks of working with Avery Tolar (Gene Hackman) that Mitch discovers that the vast majority of BL&L's business is tied to organized crime, with crime boss Joey Morolto (Paul Sorvino) using the firm to launder Mafia money.
FBI agents Wayne Tarrance (Ed Harris) and F. Denton Voyles (Steven Hill) try to blackmail Mitch into helping them make a case against the firm, while BL&L's "security director" William Devasher (Wilford Brimley) is blackmailing him to do as he's told after Mitch foolishly allows himself to be seduced by a prostitute hired by the firm.
Director Sydney Pollack’s star-studded thriller makes its debut on Blu-ray exclusively at Best Buy on May 29.

Michael Mann Retrospective - Collateral (2004)
Directed by Michael Mann. Starring Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Mark Ruffalo, Jada Pinkett Smith, Javier Bardem, Bruce McGill, Irma P. Hall, Peter Berg and Jason Statham.
SYNOPSIS:
A Los Angeles cab driver unwittingly becomes the chauffer for a hired assassin.
Love this scene and music
Cruise traning
To improve upon the depth and detail of the nighttime images for his 2004 thriller Collateral, director Michael Mann shot the exterior footage with high definition digital cameras giving the movie a gritty documentary feel. Initially it was jarring to see the usually glamorous Tom Cruise playing the grey-haired assassin Vincent; however, the shock quickly disappears as he effortlessly dissolves into his psychotically-charming character. The pivotal role is given to Jamie Foxx who plays the unfortunate cabbie, Max. The transformation from being the victim to the victor is so believable that the performance provided Foxx with one of his two Oscar nominations that year.
The Chicago filmmaker impressed Tom Cruise with his vision for the motion picture. “When Michael sent the script he sent different stills,” explained the box office megastar, “almost an art motif of things he was thinking about, and what he wanted to explore. It was just something else because his vision of L.A. and what he sees has real emotion, has real poetry. I knew it was going to be a lot of fun and it was.”
In regards to the nondescript attire Cruise wears doing the course of the film, Mann stated: “It's not really a disguise, but it's anonymous. If somebody actually witnesses him and police ask for a description, what are people going to say? A middle-aged, middle-height guy wearing a middle grey suit and white shirt. It describes anybody and nobody.”
When it came to portraying Vincent convincingly, Cruise stated, “It was kind of an anti-social character. It was months of talking with Michael and finding that point of fracture. Where does it all go wrong for Vincent and where does it start? You know. We just kept creating layers. Normally, I always do a lot of research for a character, particularly something like this. That back story has to inform every scene. With Michael, he had pictures of where I came from. We discussed a lot of different aspects of where I live and how I became the way I became as Vincent. So it will emotionally inform the movie and start to look at where does this fracture happen. Vincent is impinging on Max. I'm driving that car from the back seat and then bring my attention to the things I have to do to get my job done. When you're making a movie, it's not like oh, it's going to happen here. It evolves out of this creative process, which Michael is excellent at.”
Michael Mann was drawn to the script written by Stuart Beattie because the story unfolds during such a short time frame. As for the original New York City setting being replaced by the City of Angels, the director remarked, “The idea of shooting an intense film like this in L.A. at night precedes the Collateral screenplay. It's something I wanted to do after the last two films that I made that were both historically accurate - extraordinarily real subjects and characters. So I had an appetite for doing a film like this before I got the Collateral script.”
The majority of the film takes place in a taxi cab with occasional flashes of gunfire. “We don't see it as an action film,” said Mann. “We see it as a drama. It's as extreme as it can be. In this one night, where these guys have been, whatever their expectations and dreams are for the future, everything is going to change. They are not going to be the same people after tonight. That's an idea, that's a dramatic idea. Then we worked very hard to build the characters and make them as real and three-dimensional as possible, just the way you are in your own lives, with as much specificity as we could build in. Then we do the dramatic scenario and that's really it.”
With the taxi having such a key role in the movie, Mann revealed, “We built 17 cabs. Some had no fronts, some had no sides. Some we didn't use at all. What actually worked out was that sequence where they're supposed to be in a real cab with someone, either myself or Gary Jay, with the camera on his shoulder, was in one of the seats. But the interesting thing about a cab is that you have to view it as an opportunity because if you have two people, they're both facing the camera, but whenever we elect to, the man in the backseat can have his own thoughts coming across his face because the other guy is not necessarily seeing him.”
The H.D. technology has found a convert in the veteran moviemaker. “For this movie, it was great shooting in digital.” However, there were complications that needed to be worked out. Mann stated, “It required a lot. It was like having a camera that's attached on an umbilical to your refrigerator at home. So it wasn't portable. But it enabled me to be very painterly with building the scene. It's counterintuitive to photograph in every conceivable way. Throw a light meter away, you don't need it. It's right there on a high def monitor. But it requires knowing exactly what you want because what's available is a much broader spectrum than a motion picture film.”
Tom Cruise had nothing but praise for his director: “It was exciting. And I could feel it. And as an actor, I love movies. I have seen all of Mann's movies. It's something you want to look at and study because he designs his pictures from the ground up and he really has a tremendous command of the medium and the storytelling.”

Tom Cruise, Lea Thompson were completely 'naked' in 'All The Right Moves'
Washington, June 14 : Actress Lea Thompson has revealed that she and actor Tom Cruise were completely naked for their make-out session in cult film 'All The Right Moves'.
"Everybody made a really big deal about it (Cruise being naked) and I was like, 'I'm naked too!,'" Contactmusic quoted her as saying on Access Hollywood Live.
Asked if she and Cruise were wearing protection and coverage, she added, "We couldn't do that... You could see the sides of us.
"I remember they were ready to shoot and it was a closed set and everything, and the DP (director of photography) said to me, 'Do you have any body make-up on,' and I said, 'What's that?' I was so young; I had no idea."
Thompson also admitted that it was a thrill to work with "committed" Cruise: "It was my second or third movie and I had never worked with anyone, like, real kind of method before. He taught me a lot. He was great."
