Miami Becomes the Sunset Strip A few years ago, Jason Handelsman wrote: "The outskirts of Miami's Overtown hood are becoming a gentrified version of the Sunset Strip in LA." And now it's actually happened.
New Line Cinema is shooting the film adaptation of a hit Broadway musical called Rock Of Ages entirely in South Florida, and the producers have turned NE 14th Street at North Miami Avenue into a movie set centering around Eve, Bar, and the Vagabond. They built the Roxy Theatre, the Bam and Jazzari, the Sun Bee, a tattoo shop, a gas station, and a couple more locations out of the old warehouses that line the corridor. Supposedly filming in Downtown Miami starts in July and the producers will be shutting down the whole block for it. We can only hope there will be plenty of sex and drugs in this movie. If we get a chance to drink a tall can of Natural Ice with Catherine Zeta Jones and smoke some downtown brown, that would be cool too. Hey, "The Movies," thanks for coming to the city. Our sunlight is better than LA's anyway. We heard you're spending more money on this production than anybody ever has in Miami. That's cool, we need that type of shit. See you in the streets. SOURCE

Tom Cruise rocks out in Florida
Tuesday, 19 July 2011
Tom Cruise has given fans a sneak peak of his Rock Of Ages character
Tom Cruise gave fans a sneak preview of the forthcoming Rock Of Ages movie, when he performed at an impromptu gig in Florida. Wearing shades, a leather waistcoat, black jeans, cowboy hat and sporting tattoos on his biceps, the Mission: Impossible star belted out Journey's Don't Stop Believin' and Bon Jovi's Wanted: Dead Or Alive as bad boy rocker Stacee Jaxx to a crowd of over 1,000, who had turned up to be extras for the filmed "concert" scene.
He was joined by co-stars Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, following a casting call from director Adam Shankman, said the Sun Sentinel.
Tom, who was earlier spotted rocking out with wife Katie Holmes and daughter Suri, previously said he is "having a blast" playing Stacee in the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical.
"It's fun. I've never done a musical and I'm having a blast. I love this character," he told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show.
The actor - who has nabbed the lead role of Jack Reacher in Christopher McQuarrie's One Shot, based on Lee Child's thrillers - admitted having a keen interest to appear in a musical.
"I saw Adam a few years ago after I saw Hairspray and I said, 'Okay, man, where's our musical?', and he came to me with this," he added.
Rock Of Ages, which also stars Russell Brand and Catherine Zeta-Jones, is currently filming around Miami and is set for release in 2012.

Co-star praises Tom Cruise's singing ability
July 21, 2011, 6:03 PM EST WENN
Tom Cruise's singing skills have been given the thumbs-up by his "Rock of Ages" co-star Malin Akerman, who is convinced the actor could "be an opera singer if he wanted to."
Cruise will show off his musical prowess with a lead role in the upcoming movie adaptation of the hit Broadway show, and one scene sees him sing a duet with the "Watchmen" actress.
Akerman tells E! Online, "It's kind of surreal, to go in and do, like, a duet with Tom Cruise. We sing 'I Want to Know What Love Is' together, which is sick [good]. So we had a really great scene, Tom and I. He was absolutely amazing to work with. You will be shocked. I kind of wasn't that surprised, because when Tom does something, he does it 150 percent. So he really just brought his ... game, and he sounds like a rock star. I'm not kidding. He could be an opera singer if he wanted to. His voice is really powerful."

Tom Cruise To Record An Album?
July 15th, 2011
Shooting upcoming movie musical "Rock Of Ages" has given Tom Cruise a taste for the rock star lifestyle.
He explained, "I've always loved music but there's nothing like doing something yourself for giving you a greater appreciation for the art form. I like trying different things. Maybe I'll record my own album. Go in the studio, go on the road."
In the film, two love-struck dreamers fall in love during the height of the hair-metal scene as they navigate the seedy world of drugs, mullets, and stripping while at a club on the Sunset Strip
