'Tom' tools around Pittsburgh Using the same 21st-century technolgy employed by Ethan Hunt, the international spy he plays in the "Mission: Impossible" movies, Tom Cruise was able to walk around Downtown Pittsburgh this week, disguised as a cardboard cutout of himself.
Wearing jeans and an untucked denim shirt and sunglasses, Cruise looked relaxed, a far cry from the role of Jack Reacher, the intense ex-military policeman he plays in "One Shot." The film, which also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, "True Blood's" Michael Raymond-James, David Oyelowo and Jai Courtney, is shooting in Pittsburgh until January.
Electrician Larry Ward, 53, posed with the two-dimensional Cruise. Ward, cradling a hot dog that was slathered with what appeared to be the works, said he is a fan of the "Mission Impossible" films.
"I like the first one, particularly," Ward said.
What would he say if he saw Cruise?
"I'd just say 'Hello,' " he said, not realizing he was talking to the real thing. "I think he's a great actor."
Next, Cruise lunched with state employees Linda Stefano and Devin Rosentreter.
Stefano, of Carnegie, listed "Top Gun" among her favorite Cruise movies. Rosentreter, of Mt. Washington, indicated that he liked "Days of Thunder."
Should Stefano encounter the man himself -- in 3-D -- what would she tell him?
"I'd just say 'Welcome to Pittsburgh,' " Stefano said.
City employee Patrick Roberts, 39, stopped to pose with the cardboard Cruise while cycling down Ross Street.
"Everybody remembers 'Risky Business,'" said Roberts, a mountain biker who serves on the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission Pedestrian Bicylce Advisory Committee. "I think it's good just to have another movie around town."
For a moment, Cruise seemed ready to break character and chat about his 1983 film, "A Few Good Men," that rocketed him to the A-list.
But he apparently figured that folks couldn't handle the truth.
