'Mission: Impossible 5' World Premiere: Tom Cruise Takes Over Vienna
Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and director Christopher McQuarrie were greeted with loud applause and cheers at the Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation world premiere in Vienna, Austria Thursday evening.
In typical fashion, Cruise showed up outside the opera early to sign autographs and take pictures with fans for more than a couple of hours. He followed Pegg who did the same.
"This city is so beautiful," Cruise told the crowd from a small stage outside the premiere to much applause. "Thank you so much for being here."
Asked about his wild plane stunt for the movie, Cruise told a group of reporters on the red carpet: "I'd do anything to entertain an audience."
He added: "When you have the opportunity to do something like that, entertain an audience and put them at the edge of their seats, I'm not going to pass it off."
Overall, more than 1,000 guests were expected for the premiere. Outside the opera house, a fan zone was expected to provide up to 2,500 fans a chance for photos and autographs. And for the red carpet, an elevated structure with stairs was built in recent days. The side of the structure featured two big screens that showed trailers and the red-carpet action.
Director McQuarrie told a group of reporters on the carpet that "the biggest challenge of all was time" in making the movie. "We just never had enough time to shoot anything, so we were under enormous pressure from beginning to end, but that really forced us to be creative, and I think it shows in the finished product."
Discussing the much-talked-about stunt scene with Cruise hanging from the side of a plane, McQuarrie said he was joking when he first suggested it, but the team immediately came together to make it happen. "I have no idea, that's up to him," he said when asked what his next movie with Cruise would be.
The movie cast includes Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris and Alec Baldwin. Cruise and J.J. Abrams are also among the producers. Universal Pictures Austria is handling the film in the country.
Pegg was also asked if he'll appear in another Mission film.
"Well, you have to wait and see," the actor replied. "I don't know if I survive this one yet."
The producers and cast also got a big ovation on stage before the premiere screening, which started two hours later than scheduled after Cruise spent much time with his fans.
McQuarrie called Cruise his best friend and said the star believed in him when noone else did yet and he was in the filmmaker "wilderness." Cruise started off by thanking Paramount, saying he has been making movies for the studio for 30 years.
He also called McQuarrie his best friend, saying the two of them were feeling like kids for being in the Vienna opera house, thinking "holy shit, this is incredible."
