Def Leppard's Phil Collen talks Tom Cruise "It's going to be a huge year for us. I definitely have a lot to talk about today," laughs Def Leppard's Phil Collen. Noisecreep is hanging with the melodic rock guitar hero discussing the band's upcoming 2012 schedule when talk about a certain movie star comes up.
"We've got the 'Rock of Ages' movie coming out which stars Tom Cruise. He's singing 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' in the film. We actually got to see him film the scene. Def Leppard was on tour in Florida and someone involved with the movie called and invited us to come down to the shoot. It was awesome to see that process.
In 'Rock of Ages' (out June 12), Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx, the lead singer of a band called Arsenal. The star goes full-on '80s for the film, sporting a wig and stage clothes that wouldn't look out of place in a vintage Warrant or Ratt video. Cruise also handles his own vocal parts in the movie, a task that impressed Collen and his Def Leppard bandmates.
"I can't wait till people hear him. The guy did a great job. He's doing my vocal part, Joe's part – all of them! This is someone who has never sung before. He was doing that thing that a lot of method actors do when they take on a role. They get into character completely. He told us he was taking five hours a day, five days a week, for four to five months, just to get the vocal aspect of the role down. That was fantastic to hear."
Collen was humbled when the Hollywood icon praised their late '80s party anthem. "I was really pleased with how down-to-earth Tom was. He was very humble and actually told us how he thought 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' was an absolute classic. He said it deserved all of the respect and attention he can give it. So we were definitely honored." SOURCE

Tom Cruise Sings 'Like An Opera Singer' He can run. He can climb cliff sides without harnesses. Heck, he can even scale the surface of the world's tallest building. And now, for his next trick, Tom Cruise will truly do the impossible: sing his heart out in front of moviegoers nationwide.
The "Mission Impossible" actor will next be seen as fictional rock god Stacee Jaxx in "Rock of Ages," director Adam Shankman's adaptation of the Broadway musical. If you think it's bizarre casting, take it from Cruise's costar, Malin Akerman — according to her, there is literally nothing that Cruise can't do, carrying a tune included.
"He's brilliant. You're going to be blown away," Akerman told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, which she's attending as an ambassador for the Brita FilterForGood Music Project campaign. "His voice is ridiculous."
Akerman should know. As reporter Constance Sack, she only has one musical number in "Rock of Ages" — a cover of "I Want to Know What Love Is" by Foreigner — which she sings opposite Cruise. "I auditioned with Cruise. We did our scene together and then I had to sing in the studio [for a musical audition]," she said of landing the role. "My role was actually one of the last ones cast, so I was the last onboard and had the least amount of prep [time]. It was nerve-wracking, to have to go in and sing in the audition."
But Akerman says any anxiety was transformed into elation when performing opposite Cruise, a Hollywood icon she likens to an equally iconic superhero.
"He's Superman to me. He can do anything he sets his mind to," she said, adding that on top of his talent as an actor and his ability to perform breathtaking stunts, Cruise can also "sing like an opera singer."
"When you're with Tom, you give it your all," Akerman said. "It was really amazing and surreal." SOURCE

Additional Shooting on <ROA> Seems filming isn’t as complete as we were led to believe on the Adam Shankman directed transfer of the stage offering, with booking in some reshoots and additional filming for the movie. The new and revised sequences will shoot next week in Los Angeles.
While it’s not known which of the film’s key castmembers – Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, etc – will be required back for the additional photography, we’ve been given the heads up (by an actor auditioning) that some new characters have been written into the film. These parts are being cast as we speak.
Nice to hear they’re still tinkering and toying with the film to make it as splendid and rockin’ an experience as possible. SOURCE

Paul Giamatti on his “Rock of Ages” solos Another project of his will definitely be makings its way to a theater near you, and that’s the big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Rock of Ages.”
When asked about Tom Cruise’s singing voice, Giamatti got very excited. “He’s terrific. His voice is amazing.”
As for his own singing, Giamatti stated that he doesn’t have his own songs, but there are moments when he sings solo during two classic rock staples, “Any Way You Want It” by Journey and “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake.
“This is not the first time I’ve sung in a movie. I did something called ‘Duets’ so, you know. . . I’m not all bad.” SOURCE

PHIL COLLEN Talks TOM CRUISE, New DEF LEPPARD Music Feb. 2, 2012 Joe Bosso of MusicRadar.com recently conducted an interview with DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below. MusicRadar.com: You were on the ["Rock Of Ages"] movie set when Tom Cruise sang "Pour Some Sugar On Me". What was that like? Phil: It was surreal. What happened was, we were in Florida on tour, and we got a phone call telling us that they were filming just up the road. They were literally shooting that sequence that day. We went to the set and met Tom Cruise, who was absolutely great. Brilliant! I really appreciate when other people do such hard work - it's inspiring. We were just knocked out by his singing, which he was doing for real. We said, "We didn't know you could sing." He smiled and said, "I couldn't — I just learned five months ago." He was having lessons and practicing five hours a day — crazy stuff. Extremely impressive. But you know, that's the kind of guy he is, swinging from cables and jumping off buildings. It's pretty nuts! MusicRadar.com: OK, now you've seen people cover DEF LEPPARD songs on YouTube clips and on "American Idol" and the like. But what's it like when the biggest star in the world is singing your song? Phil: You think about it in a totally different way. You get over the song and the subject matter, and all you can focus on is that somebody so iconic doing it. With a lot of people, their 'iconic-ness' gets in the way. Take Beyonce, for example: She's a really good singer, an amazing singer, but nobody even notices how good she is because they're so focused on her being Beyonce. Her whole aura gets in the way. It was a little bit like that with Tom Cruise. You're like, "Oh my God, it's Tom Cruise!" But he's got it down. He looked a little bit like Iggy Pop and some…I don't know, some cool rock star! [laughs] It was trippy. But what's great is that he can really sing. On his track, he sings the backgrounds, so he's doing my parts, as well. Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand Keep Good Company in 'Rock of Ages' Tom Cruise has won most of the early buzz for his performance as rock star Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages, New Line’s June 15 musical release based on the hit Broadway show. But don’t be surprised if Alec Baldwin, 53, ends up stealing the show.
The 30 Rock star plays Dennis Dupree, owner of The Bourbon, a Sunset Strip club facing closure in the 1980s. In the scene above, co-star Julianne Hough tries to convince Baldwin’s character to give struggling musician Drew Boley (Diego Boneta, background) a shot while Russell Brand’s rocker character (left) looks on.
Baldwin dons several outrageous period outfits in the film, requiring just the right wig to pull them off.
“If that wig didn’t work, then the whole thing was going to be a disaster,” says director Adam Shankman. “The world is so used to seeing him as Jack Donaghy, and I needed to get him as far away from Jack Donaghy as I could.” Shankman says Baldwin took a special on-set liking to Brand.
“He and Russell ended up being like Tracy and Hepburn,” he recalls. “They were so giddy, and they did everything together.” SOURCE

Tom Cruise bares 'fantastic' backside in 'Rock of Ages' With "Rock of Ages," Tom Cruise is aiming to show audiences a different side of himself. Literally.
In the first scene of the upcoming musical, the actor will reveal his backside, says director Adam Shankman. Cruise's buttocks have made on-screen appearances before, in "Far and Away," "Jerry Maguire" and "Eyes Wide Shut." But at 49, he's still not ashamed of showing off a little skin, said Shankman.
"We were filming a scene and I told him, ''You do know when I come around, I'm gonna see your [butt]?'" the filmmaker recalled this week in Las Vegas, where he was on hand at the CinemaCon theater owners convention to promote the June release. "And he's like, 'Is there any way to shoot around it?' And I said, 'No.' And he said, 'How is it?' And I said, 'It's fantastic.' And he said, 'OK, well then let's shoot it.'"
In "Rock of Ages," an Cruise plays Stacie Jaxx, an aging, out-of-control rocker whom Shankman describes as a mix of Axl Rose, Bret Michaels and Keith Richards. "It wasn't so much that there was a rock star I wanted him to emulate," said Shankman. "It was the fact that these guys lived in a world where no one said no to them, during a period where they were not conscious of things like AIDS. They were literally children run amok."
Shankman admitted he was initially hesitant to direct a jukebox musical, which is based on a popular 2006 Broadway musical. But after the filmmaker attended a performance of the show in New York City and saw how "every straight guy in the house knew the words to every song," he changed his tune.
He'd discussed working on a musical with Cruise before, and after the actor expressed how much he loved Shankman's 2007 take on "Hairspray" -- saying it was his daughter Suri's favorite movie -- the two decided to team up for "Rock of Ages."
"I think it's a risk that we're both really excited about how it turned out," said Shankman. "When this opportunity came up, I thought, 'If he can pull this off, people will go crazy.' It's a real performance. It's an incredible show of talents no one ever thought he had." SOURCE

Why Tom Cruise Was Cast in ‘Rock of Ages’ When writer, producer and choreographer Adam Shankman was deciding on his latest project as a director, he decided that he wanted to make a movie about a subject he hadn’t seen onscreen before. That subject, he ultimately decided, was seeing Tom Cruise in a–less chaps.
[WSJ] caught up with Shankman following the presentation to ask him more about the film.
Q: Musical adaptation seems to come and go in Hollywood. What made this one particularly appealing to you?
A: It was that experience of seeing the original play. The audience was so into it and immersed in the joy of the story and the concert element of it. It was irresistible to me. I mean, it took a lot of work to try to ground it as movie. The play is very presentational and there’s a narrator. But this play had that magic ingredient of joy.
Q: How well did you know Tom Cruise coming into the film?
A: I had met Tom through mutual friends. He had once come up to me with a big handshake and told me that “Hairspray” was was one of [his daughter] Suri’s favorite movies and he was fascinated by how I had created the tone of the movie. I was literally shaking at the time, because I was amazed that Tom Cruise was talking to me about filmmaking. On a different occasion, I needed for one of my movies to clear a poster of “Top Gun,” so I called him to ask if he could clear it and he followed up with, ‘When are you going to make a musical with me?” In my head I was like, never, but then this opportunity came up so I offered it to him to see if he would bite. My idea was that it would be huge for the world’s biggest movie star to play the world’s biggest rock star.
He thought it was such as crazy idea. But he just likes challenges, and I think being a father and seeing Suri love music and [his wife] Katie love dancing, it was in his consciousness and he jumped at it. But we did have this agreement that if we put him with a vocal coach and he just couldn’t sing, we would make it go away and just never discuss it again. So I listened in from the other side of the door of his first vocal lesson and immediately knew it would work. He was hitting these notes that were unbelievable, and in the movie, he has to sing “Paradise City,” which is so high, but he just wrestles it to the ground.
Q: The rest of your cast is surprisingly musical as well.
A: They all just stepped up. Alec [Baldwin] I had heard sing on “Saturday Night Live.” Russell [Brand] I’d heard sing in “Get Him to the Greek.” Catherine Zeta-Jones has an Oscar [for “Chicago”]. At the end of the day, I knew it was going to be fine. Especially since I had Mary J. Blige as well. I put a few ringers in there, let’s put it that way. SOURCE

I can't seem to recall when we see TC's buttocks in Jerry Maguire or Eyes Wide Shut.
On a side note, I met Lea Thompson two weeks ago and I asked her what it was like working with Tom Cruise nekkid. She laughed and walked away. Nice lady though.
