Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible 4' Shoots to No. 1 Paramount's Tom Cruise starrer Mission: Impossible--Ghost Protocol topped the Wednesday box office as it expanded nationwide, collecting $6.6 million in addition to $2 million in Tuesday night shows for a total $8.6 million.
In a promising sign for Paramount and co-financing partner Skydance Productions, M:I4 earned an A- CinemaScore. And, including the $17.1 million earned in 425 IMAX and large-format sneaks that began last Friday, the franchise installment is all in with $25.7 million. Brad Bird directed the film, which also stars Jeremy Renner.
Overseas, MI:4 has grossed north of $85 million since launching last weekend in select markets.
Box office observers were heartened by the level of theater traffic on Wednesday after three miserable weekends, but warn that this weekend could be tough since Christmas eve--notoriously bad for moviegoing--falls on a Saturday. Thursday and Friday should be good days, and next week even better. SOURCE

Box Office Report: 'Mission: Impossible 4' Stays No. 1 With $6.4 Mil Thursday
So the film will make back its budget this weekend. Awesome. Also, most boxoffice pundits are reporting a total 5 day weekend of $65 million... I mean, how realistic is that given that Christmas is on Sunday and Christmas eve is on Sat?? Theaters close early for the evening and open late on Christmas day.

I mean, how realistic is that given that Christmas is on Sunday and Christmas eve is on Sat?? $65 million feels a bit high for a "Sunday Xmas" weekend, $40 more likely. I think Fri & Mon will be big with a smaller than normal Saturday. Next week is the big $$ week with holiday bookends and everyone out and about.

Don't forget the smaller than normal Saturday as well. Theaters, well in North America at least, close early on Christmas eve. Also, I like how people are attributing the success of the film solely on Brad Bird. While I agree he's the major force behind the critical/box office success of MIGP, I find it amusing that, when a Cruise film performs, it's everything BUT him, but when his films bomb, the brunt of the blame falls on his shoulders. Hmmm...

Box Office Report: Cameron Crowe's 'We Bought a Zoo' Sluggish at No. 6; 'M:I4' Still No. 1 I think the $9.7 is both a good and bad number. It's bad because I expected the film to make more for a Friday. Especially considering that reciepts will be down for both Saturday and Sunday considering it's Christmas. It's good because, it's been a bad year at the box office and box office reciepts are down in general, and there's a gazillion other films that were released this weekend, all competing for box office share.

The film has generated approximately $33.1 million domestically and approximately $13.0 million internationally in IMAX theatres. For the four day weekend, the film generated approximately $6.1 million domestically in IMAX theatres and generated approximately $2.7 million internationally in IMAX theatres. To date, the film has an overall gross of $367 million worldwide.
"We are honored that Paramount and the MI:4 filmmakers entrusted IMAX to put the picture's best foot forward and be the word-of-mouth ambassadors that separated it from the rest of the pack," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. We believe the film's success demonstrates how IMAX is bringing "must see" back to movie-going."
The IMAX release of this fourth installment of Mission: Impossible features approximately 30 minutes of scenes filmed with IMAX cameras. Exclusively in IMAX, these sequences expand to fill the entire screen, and further immerse the audience in the explosive action and vast scope of the film. One featured sequence includes the unbelievable stunt performed by Tom Cruise as he scaled the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai, providing an up-close, you-are-there experience as only IMAX can.
The IMAX release of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie. SOURCE

The drops for the film are absolutely amazing!! $400 in less than three weeks is nothing short of astounding. Congratulations to Brad Bird, Cruise and Co! You all know how much I was dreading this film since its announcement (DO WE REALLY NEED ANOTHER ONE?!), but who would have thought that this film would go on to become Cruise's best reviewed film since Risky Business, his return to the top of the box office, and well, redemption in general. Plus, the film rocked my socks (and I hate action!). It's a good time to be a Tom Cruise fan :-)
