Cruise Drops U.N.C.L.E. to Focus on MISSION EXCLUSIVE: Tom Cruise has exited as the lead in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., the remake of the classic TV series that Guy Ritchie will direct for Warner Bros. Cruise was scheduled to star in the film with Armie Hammer, but he has stepped out of the picture to focus on producing and starring in Mission: Impossible 5. Paramount and Skydance are now planning to begin shooting the latest installment of that franchise before year’s end. Warner Bros has a script they like, and a top director who’s expecting to direct U.N.C.L.E. in the fall. The timing proved too difficult and so Cruise stepped out to focus on M:I5.
While it might seem that Cruise could squeeze in the film before moving to M:I5, that’s not the way he has worked on the Paramount franchise. In the last film, Ghost Protocol, he was heavily involved in planning and performing death defying stunts that included running along the glass exterior of a skyscraper in Abu Dhabi, about 124 floors high. He’ll want to do something to top that, so this is an accelerated process and it will become the focus of the rest of the year for Cruise. The actor remains on good terms with Warner Bros, recently completing the Doug Liman-directed science fiction film All You Need Is Kill, which will be released June 6, 2014. SOURCE

Alright, show of hands. Who thinks U.N.C.L.E. was just a bargaining ploy in MISSION negotiations?

Screenwriter Drew Pearce Talks Mission Impossible 5 Congratulations, obviously- that’s a hell of a franchise to be a part of. I appreciate that you’ve literally just come on board, and if you have any ideas yet you can’t reveal anything, but could you discuss your attitude to the franchise so far? It’s pretty unique, in that Tom always gets a different director with a specific vision for each installment so it never gets stale.
[The Mission: Impossible franchise] has been doing for a while what Marvel is now doing, particularly for Phase Two, which is trying to bring a different flavour to each of the movies. To be honest, we’ve really only been working on it a week or so. J.J’s very involved, despite the fact he’s got Star Wars. I believe a Director’s about to be announced very soon. Tom is very hands-on, as is Robert [Downey Jr.] in the Iron Man franchise, but in a very different way, as you would expect as per their personalities.
There’s nothing really to talk about yet, but it’s interesting when you look back at the other four movies because there’s a fairly intimidating roster of talent- from De Palma, [Steve] Zallian… Robert Towne (Screenwriter of Chinatown) co-wrote the first film, and obviously J.J. as well. I almost hadn’t considered the lineage when I took on the job.
I’ll hold my hands up and say that I was a little bit reticent to take [on] another sequel, because I’ve got a lot of my own original projects and I want to get them out there and kick in with directing, but the bare-faced truth of it is that I’m very much just starting out and this could all just disappear tomorrow, and I do need to get a couple of movies on the score sheet. The trouble with most things these days is that they’re just very unlikely to happen. So ‘Mission’ felt like a way of working on a franchise that I really love, plus also working on a movie that is virtually guaranteed a green light.
So are there any influences you’re looking to draw from to construct the story- the original TV show? Any novels? Films from the same genre? Is there anything at all you’re revisiting to prep yourself for writing?
We’re just getting into that [stage], so even telling you the movies that I want to start screening for the gang would be giving too much away.
I think my approach is actually kind of similar to Iron Man- what comes first is as true and genuine as possible an emotional journey for the central character. Everything else- the villain, the action sequences- has to come off of that. Like with Iron Man 3, what we tried to do with the villain was [to have him] reflect or antagonise the areas of emotional difficulty that Tony’s going through at that moment [in time].
It’s not that hard to keep secrets about Mission: Impossible 5 because I don’t have any yet! SOURCE

Screenwriter Drew Pearce talks Mission: Impossible 5
Tuesday, 17 September 2013 British screenwriter Drew Pearce is developing quite the reputation in Hollywood as of late; he's already broken the $1 billion barrier with this year's superhero smash hit Iron Man 3 (as well as polishing the scripts for Pacific Rim and Godzilla) and next up on his slate is another franchise sequel Mission: Impossible 5, which is set to reunite star Tom Cruise with his Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie. During an interview with IGN, Pearce spoke about scripting the latest instalment in the blockbuster spy series...
"The challenge is pretty clear, which is that you have to be better than the four which came before you and they've already used a bunch of ideas that are probably really good for a Mission Impossible movie. I think it's also kind of exciting because you learn from those four. Definitely as far as I'm concerned and - Chris McQuarrie who's directing it and Tom who's very involved, as is J.J. Abrams - and I think elements of the first Mission, we loved the actual gang in first Mission. If you look back now, it's an incredible array of actors and the way it refreshed was really good, and I think Ghost Protocol just nailed tone. Brad [Bird] is a kind of genius of action, and I think the Bhurja sequence is a modern classic."
Mission: Impossible 5 is currently without a release date, although 2015 would seem a good bet, seeing as every other franchise is set to drop a new instalment then.

"Mission: Impossible 5" Starts In February?
16 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »
Industry news site Production Weekly has tweeted that filming is slated to begin in February on the fifth "Mission: Impossible" movie.
Drew Pearce ("Iron Man 3") is writing the script with Chris McQuarrie ("Jack Reacher") slated to direct.
The project is said to be currently scouting locations out of its London production office. This was backed up by McQuarrie who has begun tweeting about pre-production in London with the tag #MI5Diary.
No details are available as to who will return for this entry beyond series star Tom Cruise. If this schedule holds true, Jeremy Renner's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" commitments may prevent him from returning.

Paramount confirms Mission: Impossible 5 for Christmas 2015
. Tom Cruise returns in Mission: Impossible 5 - one week ater Star Wars arrives in cinemas...
With the various pieces now falling into place, Paramount Pictures has fired the gun on Mission: Impossible 5, which it's announced will be in cinemas on December 25th 2015 in the US. We'd imagine we'll get it a day later in the UK.
The new instalment in the series has been penned by Drew Pierce (Iron Man 3), and will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie (who previously helmed Jack Reacher, also starring Tom Cruise). Tom Cruise will be reprising the role of Ethan Hunt, although it's not clear yet if the likes of Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner will be returning.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Procotol, the last film in the series, was both the most popular this year, and also the biggest grossing film of Tom Cruise's career. All concerned will be keen to repeat that level of success.
One point of note: the movie arrives in cinemas one week after Star Wars: Episode VII. And with Kung Fu Panda 3, the adaptation of Dan Brown's Inferno, and Duncan Jones' Warcraft movie all arriving around then too, that's some competition...
MI:3 was great, MI:4 was awesome, hopefully it continues on it's awesome path. Actually, i tihink I enjoyed all of the MI films. The first one was a good espionage thriller, 2 was an awesomedumb action movie with a thinly woven plot in order to display cool acion sequences....Tom Cruises best films I reckon. Re-watchable for me, but more so 3 and 4 (Number 2 was cool because it was really the first big hollywood movie to use Sydney as a location, not like the matrix which used Sydney to be filmed in). Submitted by That L Chap on Thu, 2013-11-14 09:41. Man, I love the M:I franchise (yes, even 2, mostly because it was gloriously silly), and I'll watch the hell out of this new one, but I can't help but feel it should be pushed to early 2016. I mean, if it was going up against Kung Fu Panda, Inferno and World of Warcraft, fair play to it, as it's an established franchise that grosses highly, but throw Star Wars into the mix? Hell no. Ep VII is going to curb stomp everything around that period.
Submitted by darthfilart on Thu, 2013-11-14 10:07. Releasing a movie at the same time Episode VII comes out is really a Mission Impossible.
But seriously, after Ghost Protocol, I'll be watching out for more MI films.
