Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion Draws Near If dystopian science fiction is your thing, you might be in for an interesting couple of years at the cinema. Not only is Ridley Scott making a new Blade Runner film, but we have a new Judge Dredd movie to look forward to (with some trepidation if recent reports are to be believed), and Vincenzo Natali appears to be getting closer and closer to bringing his William Gibson-backed take on Neuromancer, the original cyberpunk novel, to the big screen.
Strangely, however, it's an original film from a relative newcomer that's currently the focus of attention in Hollywood. In an industry where every third movie is a sequel, prequel or remake, Kosinski's project is a rare original, big-budget science-fiction project. So why exactly is it being made when so many excellent scripts of a similar disposition find themselves languishing in producers' bins? Well, for a start, Kosinski managed to recruit one Tom Cruise to take the lead role of a soldier who is one of the last men on the planet, long before any studio even decided to throw money at this thing. Secondly, in Hollywood's eyes, Kosinski is a winner because his first film, sci-fi sequel Tron: Legacy, actually made money despite a gargantuan $170m production budget.
Oblivion is reportedly shooting with a $100m budget next year. It centres on an encounter between Cruise's character and a mysterious new arrival on the planet, a beautiful woman who crashes in a spacecraft and may or may not be a disguised alien interloper from a nefarious anti-human race.
Oblivion immediately recalls Solaris, Andrei Tarkovsky's brooding 1972 tale of an astronaut who encounters a creature that resembles his dead wife while alone on a space station, as well as the wonderful Pixar animation Wall-E, that paean to the last years of silent film, which also centred on a lonely protagonist charged with prowling a deserted planet long since abandoned by its other inhabitants.
I can't seem to find a copy of Kosinski's graphic novel anywhere, so I'm assuming it's not in print. Have a gander at these images from the comic over at firstshowing.net: with its vision of a grey and lifeless Earth, Oblivion looks pleasingly bleak and spartan. At the very least, it's blissfully free of the shiny, vacuous neo-Matrix stylings that lurk around every corner in Tron: Legacy. No wonder Disney decided to pass.
There's something auteurish about directing a defiantly left-field movie based on your own graphic novel, but Kosinski's background does not immediately suggest a visionary temperament. In the 70s, if you wanted to make sci-fi movies, you would attend film school, create an ultra-low-budget debut using your college's facilities with your mates in the starring roles, and then hope for the best. These days it seems you might be better off learning to make adverts for video games and cosying up to studio execs.
If Oblivion goes well, Kosinski also has a remake of 1979 post-Star Wars space opera The Black Hole in the pipeline, as well as Archangels, which sounds a little like Men in Black without the laughs. Four sci-fi movies in a row (if we include Tron: Legacy) would be twice Ridley Scott's entire career total so far, but is Kosinski really the right film-maker to send us hurtling into the future? Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Talks Oblivion With Game Of Thrones sweeping all before it and Scandinavian thriller Headhunters landing soon, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is on the verge of a well-deserved breakthrough. After all, anyone who looks that much like Jaime Lannister deserves to have an oxen perpetually roasting on the spit of life.
There are precious few swords or sandles in his next major undertaking, though - unless sci-fi epic Oblivion has some major surprises in store for us. Tron Legacy’s Joseph Kosinski is already hard at work creating a post-apocalyptic world in which aliens lurk menacingly and Tom Cruise's solder, Jack, is charged with repairing the drones that protect our planet.
Coster-Waldau, who plays veteran weapons expert Sykes in the movie, explained his character's dynamic with Cruise's jaded trooper in intriguing terms when Empire caught up with him. "It's a Tom Cruise movie for sure; I don't think there's a scene without him. I play a soldier who's not a big fan of Tom's character. He's seen a lot of horrible things and there's a lot of boiled-up anger in him."
So is he on the side of the angels or the bugs? "I think Tom's character would probably described my character as a bad guy, but I don't think the audience would..." SOURCE

Emily Blunt talks Oblivion Next up? Training and Tom Cruise as she prepares for her role in All You Need is Kill , which she says will begin production in the fall after she undergoes intensive training to, “Get all grrrr,” she growls, doing her best Hulk impression. “I’m actually quite nervous about the training. I’m supposed to be playing one of the best soldiers in the world. Ha. Ha. I think my life is going to miserable for about 10 weeks. But I’m very excited.”
The film, which is based on the graphic novel , will be directed by Doug Liman. “He’s got some very cool ideas,” she says. Other details will have to wait, but she did have this to say about Tom Cruise. “He’s rad. I like him so much. He’s really fun and really funny.” Plus, she says, “He really has the best skin ever.” SOURCE

He will remain in Reykjavík for a few days before moving his residence to Hrafnabjörg in Vaðlaheiði, near Akureyri, for the summer. Oblivion Lands M83 to Compose the Score
Anthony Gonzalez's M83 will compose the score for OblivionDirector Joseph Kosinski has chosen the French electronic group M83 to compose the score for his futuristic sci-fi thriller Oblivion, which is currently in production.
The filmmaker's move shouldn't come as a huge surprise, since he used the French techno group Daft Punk to score Tron: Legacy. Here's what the director had to say about bringing the group, lead by Anthony Gonzalez, on board.
"I was listening to his music back in 2005 when I first wrote this story, so he was part of this from the very beginning in my mind, kind of creatively. And about two years ago, when I started putting together a shortlist of people I'd love to talk to for this project, I sat down with him and we talked about it. And it was very clear he had a passion for film and I knew just from his electronic music that he had the potential to create something epic. The story has a small cast of characters, it was designed as kind of a character-driven story, but at the same time it takes place in a vast world. So I need a score that is both emotional, but at the same time can feel big and have a lot of space in it. And his music has that. It's emotional, it's triumphant, it just has a spirit and a life to it. It can feel very intimate but it also can feel just huge when it has to. His music is able to capture all those different feelings and qualities simultaneously."
Oblivion is based on the graphic novel co-created by Joseph Kosinski himself. The story is set in a future world where humans now live in the clouds, after the Earth became too toxic. Tom Cruise plays one of the last men on the planet, who goes on a journey of discovery with a woman who crashed her ship.
Oblivion comes to theaters July 19th, 2013 and stars Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Melissa Leo. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski.

It's been a rocky weekend for Tom Cruise, but despite the fact that Katie Holmes filed for divorce, he was back to work near Reykjavik today. Tom and his son Connor are staying in Iceland while he films additional scenes for his futuristic space project, Oblivion. The guys seem to be making the best of their time in Scandinavia, and even though Tom's busy on the set, Connor's taking advantage of the picturesque location. Connor's been sharing photos on his Instagram account of his volcano hikes, snowmobile adventures, and near-freezing glacier dives.
Tom celebrates his 50th birthday on Tuesday, but it's unlikely he'll be partying with Katie. The actor was reportedly blindsided by her decision to file for divorce and sole custody of Suri. Katie and Suri have moved out of Tom's Manhattan apartment and are rumored to be settling into a new residence. Source: FameFlynet
