Here’s What’s Going to Happen in 'Oblivion' Based on the 'Star Waves' Song from the Soundtrack by M83 Tom Cruise has this new sci-fi movie coming out called Oblivion. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion is his follow-up to Tron: Legacy, a film most memorable for its striking visuals, its digital take on Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, and its exquisite score by Daft Punk. This time around, Kosinski has enlisted M83 to score his new film. You may remember M83 from their last record Hurry Up We’re Dreaming, featuring the hit single “Midnight City,” otherwise known as “HA-Huh-hoo-HA!”
M83’s first song from the movie recently hit the web, and as Noisey’s self-proclaimed science-fiction correspondent, I can say with cyborg-like certainty that between seeing the trailer at least a dozen times in theaters and hearing the song like three times just now, I can calculate with relative accuracy what is probably going to happen in this movie. Great Movie Scores Written by Rock, Pop & Hip-Hop Artists April 9, 2013 By Mark Rozeman. Next week marks the release of the Tom Cruise-starring sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion. Besides the fact that it boasts one of the biggest movie stars in the world as its lead, one of the major hooks for the movie involves, of all things, the soundtrack. Composed by M83’s Anthony Gonzalez, the score is an epic, soaring piece that is a must-have for any fans of Gonzalez’s work with M83. It also serves as an ideal talking point for a trend that has gained prominence in recent years. Whereas film scores were once exclusive to classically trained individuals like Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, John Barry and John Williams, the past 30 years has seen a major buck in that trend. Today, it’s not uncommon for filmmakers to bring in rock, soul, electronic or even hip-hop artists to create the sound of their film. This year alone, we’ve seen scores composed by the aforementioned Gonzalez, Skrillex (Spring Breakers) and Faith No More’s Mike Patton (The Place Beyond the Pines), with more sure to come. The following list will pick out some of the exceptional film work demonstrated by some our favorite musicians. Some ground rules—the contribution in question must be a musical score rather than a collection of songs culled from an artist’s recent album (thus disqualifying Leonard Cohen for McCabe & Ms. Miller, Cat Stevens for Harold and Maude as well as Jimmy Cliff for The Harder They Come) and, for the sake of fairness, films where the central musician is also the star are void (so no Purple Rain, 8 Mile or Once). OBLIVION's opened here yesterday..
I'll see it tomorrow..
Unfortunately reviews are not too good but the critics here have fallen in love with Tom.. I read one review today at Hurriyet (a major newspaper) -- it is all about Cruise. "He shines", "he lights up the screen", "he looks more handsome than ever..", "the film is worth seeing for Cruise." The music has its share.

Oscars 2014: La.-shot 'Oblivion' makes shortlist of films still in running for visual effects award
The Oscar race for best visual effects is down to 10 films, after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today (Dec. 5) revealed the titles of the films making the shortlist for the 2013-2014 award. Among them is "Oblivion," the sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise that shot in New Orleans and Baton Rouge in 2012 and which opened in theaters this past spring.
Director Joseph Kosinski's film is in good company, however, with some heavy-hitters still in the running. The full Oscar shortlist for films in the visual effects category follows, in alphabetical order:
•"Elysium" •"Gravity" •"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" •"Iron Man 3" •"The Lone Ranger" •"Oblivion" •"Star Trek Into Darkness" •"Thor: The Dark World" •"Pacific Rim" •"World War Z"
The shortlist was determined by the executive committee of the Academy's Visual Effects Branch. Now, all members of the branch will be allowed to vote for five final nominees after screening 10-minute excerpts from each film. The results of that vote will determine the final Oscar nominees in the category.
The list of nominees in all Oscar categories will be announced Jan. 16. The 86th annual Academy Awards will be handed out in a live ceremony on March 2, originating live from Hollywood and airing on ABC television
