Cruise Agrees to "All You Need Is Kill" After sitting in development limbo for many months, "All You Need Is Kill" may finally be on the fast track as Tom Cruise has agreed to star.
While a deal with the studio isn't officially signed, Cruise has been weighing this role for some time after continued talks with director Doug Liman.
Sources say Warners. prexy Jeff Robinov always wanted a big star, though the script called for a younger actor like Ryan Gosling or Joseph Gordon Levitt. Studio has already had the script rewritten to make the character fit Cruise's age.
Dante Harper penned the script with Joby Harold doing the rewrite. Sources said Cruise liked the script so much that Liman traveled to Pittsburgh, where the thesp was shooting Paramount and Skydance's "One Shot," to meet with the actor about the role.
Another important development: Liman, who's been onboard to direct "Kill" for some time, has lined it up as his next project. For months, Liman had been weighing doing this or the Paramount space adventure "Luna," which struggled to assemble financing and saw David Ellison's Skydance Productions drop out -- forcing Liman to turn to "Kill" for now.
Cruise' busy schedule could enable Liman to do both: After "One Shot," Cruise is expected to shoot the Universal sci-fier "Oblivion" in March, then start on "Kill" in the late third/early fourth quarter of 2012. No start date is yet set. SOURCE

Tom Cruise Lining Up 'We Mortals Are' for Warner Bros.
The "Mission: Impossible" star could make the sci-fi epic next year.
12:14 PM PST 12/1/2011 by Jay A. Fernandez
Tom Cruise is a guy who likes to stay busy.
With two films in the can (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Rock of Ages), one filming (One Shot) and another (Horizons) lined up after that, Cruise is solidifying his interest in starring in the Warner Bros. sci-fi actioner We Mortals Are, with negotiations expected to begin soon. THR first reported in early October that the actor was talking to the studio and director Doug Liman about the project.
ANALYSIS: Why Tom Cruise Still Matters in the Film Industry
Based on the 2004 Japanese graphic novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe, the film would have Cruise playing a soldier defending Earth from attacking aliens. Killed in battle, he is then stuck in a time loop that causes him to relive that day over and over while gaining strength and skill each time as he tries to change his fate.
Dante Harper and Joby Harold wrote the adapted screenplay.
The CAA-repped Cruise has Ghost Protocol hitting theaters December 21 and Rock of Ages opening in June. With Paramount's One Shot shooting now for a February 2013 release, and Universal's Horizons lined up to start production in the new year for a summer 2013 opening, Cruise could conceivably film Mortals next summer.
Oddly for Cruise, who likes to mix up roles and genres, Horizons and We Mortals Are both involve sci-fi settings and conceits involving a soldier battling an alien race.

Ahhh I'm so tired of one action film after another. Can't he just do drama? And work with great directors again? Lol. And what happened to Oblivion??

Doug Liman Talks ALL YOU NEED IS KILL Question: Do you know what film you’ll be doing next?
DOUG LIMAN: I’m hoping it’s going to be a film called All You Need is Kill, for Warner Bros. with Tom Cruise. It’s just figuring out everyone’s schedules, and if we can, in fact, do it next.
Q: What drew you to that subject matter? Is it the fact that it’s so unlike anything you’ve done before?
LIMAN: Well, nothing I’ve done is like anything else I’ve done before, so that is one of my criteria. But, I just fell in love with the script. There is no other formula for me, in this business. If I’m not in love with the script, there’s nothing. It doesn’t matter what you give me. It has to start with the script. And, Dante Harper wrote a really cool script that’s unlike anything I’ve ever read. When you can come across a piece of material that’s totally original and fun and completely satisfying, you jump on it.
It’s the same emotions that drew me into I Just Want My Pants Back. It sounds crazy because one’s 20-somethings in Brooklyn, and the other is Tom Cruise battling aliens, but the decision for me comes down to, “Is the material fresh, original, fun, smart, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, and satisfying?” Usually those things work in opposition to each other. If you do something that’s really original, you discover why everybody else does it the other way, usually. There’s a reason cliches exist, ‘cause they work.
Early in my career, I started just doing things my own way, and it worked, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t dark moments on pretty much every one of my movies, where I said to myself, “Oh, my god, what have I done?” There’s a reason why there was a particular rule that everybody else was following, that I just ignored. Sometimes rules are there to save your life. And then, I would just work through it.
Q: Is it harder to find original material like that, that really gets you excited?
LIMAN: It’s not that it’s harder. It’s always been hard. It’s not because the material is not out there, as much as it is, on the film side, that the business changed. It’s very hard for a studio to take a chance on a piece of original material. They used to have the fall-back of DVD sales. They had ways in which they could safely make an investment in a piece of original material, and those opportunities aren’t necessarily there anymore.
Q: Are you still looking to do Everest, at some point?
LIMAN: Oh, for sure. I’m climbing Mt. Washington in three weeks, as part of my research for the film. I’ve climbed it before, but now I’m climbing it to pay attention to other details. In that case, specifically how do you film climbing, in a really exciting and visceral way? If you look at Mission: Impossible 4, it’s very hard to do vertigo, and they really did a brilliant job on that movie, when he’s on the side of that building. I’ve done sides of buildings, in The Bourne Identity and in Covert Affairs, and I’ve never elicited the emotional response that Brad [Bird] and Tom [Cruise] got in M:I4. So, I’m starting to think about, for me, how am I going to film sequences on a mountain climb that will be as visceral and exciting as the climb itself is?
Q: When are you looking to go into production on that?
LIMAN: Hopefully, it will be right after All You Need is Kill. SOURCE

Emily Blunt in talks for 'KILL' Emily Blunt is in negotiations to star opposite Tom Cruise in All You Need Is Kill, a sci-fi war film with a twist that is being made by Warner Bros. and director Doug Liman.
The script sees Cruise as a [conscript] who gets killed in action but, in Groundhog Day fashion, is reborn each day to fight, and die, again and again. He begins trying to train himself to be a better soldier in hope of changing his fate.
Blunt would play Valkyrie One, one of humankind’s best soldiers. SOURCE

Emily Blunt Talks KILL Blunt is currently training stateside before going to London to learn fight choreography for a month ahead of an October filming date. Speaking with Movieline over the weekend at Comic-Con, where she, Johnson, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt presented footage from Looper, Blunt described her regimen for what she describes as “the most ass-kicking role I’ll probably do.”
“I basically do ten workouts a week,” she said. “Two a day, five days a week – it’s hell! And I’ve cut out drinking wine, which is really sad! That’s the thing I miss most.”
“But I’m going to build these guns out,” she added, flexing her biceps. “They’re coming, right? I’m like that in the mirror. I’m just flexing over and over, and John [Krasinski]’s like, ‘Holy shit!’”
Why action, and why now? “Really, it’s about timing and about the right part, the right moment and the right crew of people. It’s never been that I’ve turned my nose up at doing that. This really felt like the right time to do it, and you can’t ask for a better team than Tom and Doug – Doug is such a visionary and Tom is the most accomplished action guy you can find. We sat down a few times, we had a table read and character development talks, and he’s really fantastic in the room with that stuff; he’s very collaborative and very, very professional. And he’s fun.”
Audiences who are used to seeing Blunt in films like The Devil Wears Prada and The Young Victoria might not expect to see her tear through battlefields and mow down aliens alongside Cruise – and that might make the shift all the more impressive. “Doug Liman said to me, ‘I wanted to cast you because I don’t think people expect it, and there’s something a bit more lethal about that,’” Blunt recalled.
Will we get to see Blunt use her newfound lethal skills Cruise at least once or twice during their time looped adventure? “I can’t say! Maybe there’s a little bit of that… maybe,” she hinted with a smile. “I’m learning martial arts now, so hopefully I have a few scenes where I can take him out.” SOURCE

Charlotte Riley Joins Tom Cruise In All You Need Is Kill
2012-08-24 05:09:48 Author: Kristy Puchko Unless you're an ardent follower of British television or the life of Tom Hardy, you probably haven't heard of English actress Charlotte Riley. The striking brunette has appeared on numerous TV show and mini-series in her native land, including a made-for-TV movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights where co-starred with her now-fiancé Hardy. However, she hasn't yet had her breakthrough Stateside. But this is about to change as Variety reports Riley has signed on to Warner Brothers' All You Need is Kill, an sci-fi action flick helmed by Bourne Identity director Doug Liman. Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's graphic novel, the film is being set up as a major tent pole release with Tom Cruise at its center. The Mission Impossible star will play a recruit in the United Defense Force tasked with confronting a deadly alien threat in open war. But when he dies on the battlefield, that's not the end of this soldier's story. Instead, he's put into a time loop of his final day. Forced to die again and again, he begins to seek a way out of this torment, and along the way becomes a better soldier. Riley will play a soldier who fights alongside Cruise's protagonist, as will The Adjustment Bureau star Emily Blunt. While this is a great platform to introduce Riley to U.S. audiences, she may still be stung by the big role that got away: that of Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. At one point, she was considered for the part that would not only have made her a worldwide star, but also re-team her with her fiancé. Of course, in the end it went to established star Anne Hathaway. But no matter, because now Riley will share the screen with one of America's biggest stars in a big budget production helmed by a groundbreaking action director. In short, expect to hear lots more about Charlotte Riley in the future. Cinema blend

Update On ‘All You Need Is Kill’ Adaptation With Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise has finished work on Oblivion, Joseph Kosinski’s followup to TRON Legacy (which was his freshman directorial effort). The A-lister is preparing for his next sci-fi/action vehicle, All You Need Is Kill, from director Doug Liman, whose resume includes Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Jumper. All You Need Is Kill is based on the Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel with illustrations by Yoshitoshi Abe. The Warner Bros. film is ramping up for an October start date overseas in London. It would make sense if the studio is planning to release the movie during the Winter 2013 season, following the pattern of last year’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and this December’s Jack Reacher (both Cruise vehicles, obviously). That’s not a given, though. screenrant ------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Cruise's 'All You Need is Kill' to Shoot at Leavesden Studios
Doug Liman's sci-fi actioner, co-starring Emily Blunt, will be the first production using the former "Harry Potter" home base since Warner Bros bought the site. LONDON – Warner Bros.' U.K. studio facility Leavesden Studios will host the Tom Cruise starrer All You Need Is Kill as its first production to shoot at the studio site. Warner Bros. Opens Leavesden Studio Near London for Business'Harry Potter' Studio Tour Opens Near LondonWarner Bros snapped up the Leavesden site on outskirts of London after making all eight Harry Potter films there using temporary soundstages and facilities. The studio pumped £100 million plus ($154 million) into revamping the site into a fully-fledged permanent studio with nine stages. The studios opened its doors for business in June, alongside with a Harry Potter tour for the buying public. That particular brand of Warner backed wizardry has been welcoming visitors since April. The studios have been used by Warner Bros for reshoots of Jack the Giant Killer earlier this year. Doug Liman's All You Need Is Kill starring Cruise and Emily Blunt, is in pre-production and will be the first feature to be entirely based there. It is a sci-fi story about a soldier who becomes stuck in a time loop on the last day of a battle to defend Earth from aliens and based on a novel by Japanese writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Warner Bros revealed details of the film to gasps of delight among the exhibition heavy audience at this year's Cinema Europe conference in Barcelona earlier this year. Printer-friendly version. Emily Blunt Talks 'KILL' and Badasses Yes, Joseph Gordon-Levitt does a great job of playing the young Bruce Willis in Rian Johnson's superb time-travel thriller "Looper" (September 28). But the performer who anchors the movie and turns it into something deeper than a hardboiled sci-fi actioner is Emily Blunt. I grabbed the in-demand actress between rehearsals on Doug Liman's "All You Need is Kill" for a brief telephone interview.
Anne Thompson: You're making another action movie?
Emily Blunt: It is, it's an action movie with Tom Cruise. I play a highly decorated soldier who's kind of a bad-ass.
AT: You've been playing some strong women of late.
EB: I'm lucky enough to have played some of those roles, I'm playing one now who is the baddest of the bad. I know a lot of tough chicks, people who are protective single mothers, who build a fort around themselves. I feel lucky not to be doing the girl tied to a tree in a corset or the girlfriend at home. It's empowering to play the one wielding the gun.
AT: The director you are working with now, Doug Liman, is known for running a loosely improvisational set.
EB: Liman does like to work that way, we have yet to start shooting, just script meetings. All of that we will find out on the day on this big expensive action movie as we practice riffing and improving stuff, so that you can find a sort of spontaneity and reality to the scenes.

Warner Sets KILL Release Date Warner Bros has staked out March 14, 2014 for All You Need Is Kill, the Doug Liman-directed film that stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.
Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.
But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth. SOURCE
