Cruise Receives Icon Award "OK, HERE's what I learned from Tom Cruise. You have a day, a bad day. The dog gets off its leash, the wife is on your back and won't stop calling, you've lost your keys, the dry cleaner has lost your best suit, you're stressed to the max, your pulse is racing. What do you do? You hum the theme from 'Mission Impossible.' It works!!"
That was Alec Baldwin at the big Friars Gala honoring Tom, the biggest male movie star in the universe.
The Friars, who are often described as "a band of earthly angels" put on one heck of a show! If you paid for a table in the fabled grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria, you got your money's worth. (The invite said black tie and 99 percent of the men obliged. I saw one open collar, and a few smart business suits. Otherwise it was a swarm of wealthy penguins.)
Alec, who confessed that the hem of his pant leg had come out and was being held up with a safety pin, also remarked on Tom the actor. Comparing Cruise in terms of artistry and commitment to former co-stars, such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Julie Harris, Baldwin said that Tom has "never stopped challenging himself, and that he 'lit the bonfire" of creativity and energy in their coming film, "Rock of Ages."
OTHERS WHO spoke glowingly about Cruise were Kevin Pollack, who appeared with him in "A Few Good Men," Mia Michaels, the choreographer of "Rock of Ages," Cuba Gooding Jr. of "Jerry Maguire" (yet another co-star who won an Oscar in a Tom Cruise film, while his own shelf remains bare of that honor), Bill Hader, who appeared in "Tropic Thunder" and Elie Wiesel.
Everybody had something amusing to say. Pollack's tale of "The Pen," which he admits he's been telling for 20 years, was probably the highlight. It's too long to repeat here, but it is "so Tom." (Supremely driven, even in his generosity, Bill Hader also told a story that showcased Tom's unique thoughtfulness, as well his need to always get the job at hand done.)
Mia Michaels admitted she is "one of these people who is forever taking notes on how things can improve. Well, the first day I saw Tom perform on the set, not only was I speechless with admiration, I realized I hadn't jotted down one note. And then Tom came over to me and said, 'How can we improve it?'" She added he was "fearless, insatiable, relentless."
But, come on! Everybody was there to see Tom. He was given the Entertainment Icon Award, following in the footsteps of Douglas Fairbanks, Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra. (There were giant screens on both sides of the ballroom. Tom, seated with his son Connor, and the always elegantly turned out Suri, laughed and flashed those legendary choppers throughout the evening. He really seemed to be enjoying himself.) Other stellar types on hand included Philip Seymour Hoffman, Matt Lauer, Laura Bell Bundy, Henrik Lundqvist and Jonathan Lipnicki. (Remember Jonathan as the funny-looking kid in "Jerry Maguire"? Well, he's all grown up and not at all funny-looking. In fact, he's hot.)
Tom took the stage swiftly and made a gracious, crisp acceptance speech that consisted mostly of praising Jerry Lewis! He explained that wife Katie was working in China, and daughter Isabella was also working someplace. "See, the women in my life work," he said. "They don't need to see me get an award!" Then out rolled a big birthday cake, anticipating Tom's birthday next month, and everybody sang "Happy Birthday." Cruise will be 50, though you'd never know it. The star retains a vital, boyish appeal, though he is clearly a man in command of himself. SOURCE

Bill Hader's Tom Cruise Story
It's a common question asked of everyone in Tom Cruise's orbit: "What's it like to work with him?" And this week at the Friars Foundation Gala honoring the Rock of Ages star, Bill Hader provided the best answer we've heard so far. When the two of them were in Los Angeles to shoot promos for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards as their Tropic Thunder characters — Cruise as movie mogul Les Grossman, Hader as his lackey — the SNL comedian heard some unfortunate news, which especially worried him as a new dad. "I hear a crew person say, 'Did you hear what happened in New York?' And I'm like, 'What happened?' 'A guy tried to set off a car bomb in Times Square.'" Hader, who had already been "a little anxious" because it was the first time he had been away from his infant daughter, Hannah, had a "full-on panic attack." He desperately tried to call and text his wife Maggie, when Cruise noticed his concern. "He comes over and he's like, 'Are you okay, man?'" Hader explained the situation. Cruise then asked when Hader was supposed to return to New York. Not for another two days.
"He thinks for a second. 'No,' he says. 'We'll get you home tonight.' And in that moment, Tom Cruise, as Les Grossman, in a karate gi, began to direct all my coverage," Hader recalled. "All my footage, all my close-ups. Boom! We do three perfect takes. Boom, boom, boom. Everyone's chest-butting each other, some people are chest-butting themselves, people are going insane." Two days' worth of work, Hader said, "and he got it done in 45 minutes." Then Katie Holmes came up to him and handed him a piece of paper with his new flight information. "You're on the red eye tonight," she told him. "I'm like, 'What?!'" Hader said. Because Cruise got him out of work and on a plane that night, he was able to surprise his wife and daughter by 7:45 the next morning and check in on them in person. "So that's what it's like to work with Tom Cruise," Hader said. SOURCE

Tom Cruise to buy new home in NYC
Tom Cruise is set to buy a new home in New York City so he can spend more time with daughter Suri.
The 'Rock of Ages' actor is said to be looking into purchasing a new property in the city after estranged wife Katie Holmes relocated to 'The Big Apple' following her decision to divorce Tom and was then given primary custody of the six-year-old girl in their divorce settlement.
Katie, 33, intends to live permanently in New York with Suri, so Tom wants a base their so he can see his child whenever he wants.
A source told the New York Post newspaper: 'Tom's looking for a new home here. He wants a fresh start. He doesn't want to go back to the East Village apartment where he was living with Katie.
'He's looking for something that's very private where he won't have to deal with going through a lobby, and people outside all the time.'
Tom - who kept the former couple's home in Beverly Hills, where the 50-year-old star lives with his eldest children, Isabella, 19, and 17-year-old Connor - has told friends his main concern is having enough space for Suri to play in.
One pal said: 'He also wants to have a nice amount of space for Suri, with outdoor space. That could mean high-end luxury apartments, but he's also looking at houses outside of the city or in gated communities.'
Katie filed for divorce last month after five years of marriage and they agreed on their divorce settlement within a matter of weeks, with the former 'Dawson's Creek' star getting primary custody of Suri with Tom being granted visitation rights.
