Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I on BD/DVD
News - Newsflash
Thursday, 14 April 2011
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I begins with a serious message delivered by the Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour (portrayed by Bill Nighy). No sooner than five minutes in to the film, we see Hermione erasing her parents memories; something mentioned in passing in the novel, but emotionally shown on the screen.
These two scenes set the tone for the rest of the movie; the happy times seen in the previous films have passed, and the Wizarding World is at war.
With respect to the book, Deathly Hallows Part I is possibly one of the truest films in the series so far. As always, scenes have been omitted but a few can be found on the Special Features, such as Harry’s farewell with Aunt Petunia and Dudley Dursley.
The acting is quite strong throughout; the increased presence of Lord Voldemort (portrayed by Ralph Fiennes) is both wonderful and terrifying to watch. The quick-witted jokes of Fred and George Weasley (portrayed by James and Oliver Phelps) add moments of needed comic relief, however short they may be.
Unlike the previous movies in the series, we see little of Hogwarts, but more of the magical world. The Ministry of Magic is explored, as well as the Burrow, the Lovegood’s residence, and most extensively, The Malfoy Manor. The recreation of these areas are again true to the books, from the entrance of The Malfoy Manor to the Atrium within the Ministry of Magic.
Composed by Alexandre Desplat, the music accompanying the film follows in his predecessors by perfectly fitting the mood and scenes, with a distinct lack of the original (and slightly cheerful) Hedwig’s Theme. A special feature can be found on the bonus disk with an insight into the recording of the orchestral score.
The Special Features disk delivers over an hour of footage, including 8 scenes that were not featured in the film, as well as 30 minutes of Focus Points (behind the scenes clips). In addition to these, the DVD also contains a promotional trailer for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a Behind the Soundtrack feature and a Golfing Jouney with Rupert Grint, Tom Felton and James and Oliver Phelps, plus much more.
The 2 Disk Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I DVD is available to buy from Sainsbury’s, who are selling a limited edition exclusive Dobby DVD Sleeve. Each person who purchases the film from Sainsbury’s also has a chance to win an 8 inch limited edition Dobby plush doll.
