Brad Bird Talks M:I 4
With just three films, Brad Bird has cemented his reputation as a top-tier filmmaker. The director won the Best Animated Feature Oscar twice, for Pixar’s The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007), which grossed a combined $1.3 billion worldwide. That résumé, which also includes the 1999 toon The Iron Giant, convinced Tom Cruise that Bird was his go-to guy to helm the fourth Mission: Impossible movie, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (due in theaters Dec. 16). And despite never having directed a live-action feature, Bird jumped at the opportunity.
EW: you’re currently directing a little one [Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol]. In your acceptance speech at this year’s Annie Awards, you jokingly implied that the live-action film community had kidnapped you. When your Pixar colleagues learned that you would be leaving them to direct this, was there a kidding sense of betrayal?
BB: I wouldn’t say betrayal. I have a really good relationship with Pixar. I really respect that studio, and I respected it way before I got there. It’s the finest group of people you could ever want to work with. I hope to do other things with them, and I think they do with me.
It’s just a matter of following where your interest lies. I’ve wanted to make a live-action film for a long time. I’ve tried to make live-action films almost as long as I’ve tried to make animated films. I had a period of time where half the projects I was trying to get off the ground were live-action. It was just that animation was the first one that went, and then once you do one, you kind of find yourself rolling into another one. So it was time for me to do [live-action]. I have many projects I want to do. Some of them are live-action, some of them are animation, and some of them are a blend. It’s just about what’s the best medium for a story.
EW: How’s Mission: Impossible gone so far?
BB: It was a very challenging shoot. It’s a big film and we had to move around a lot. We were doing a lot of physical effects live — we weren’t using special effects. And so it was physically a real challenge.
EW: Did you come across situations where you wish it was an animated film?
BB: Yes and no. The wonderful thing about animation is you have absolute control over every frame. The nightmare of animation is that you have absolute control over every frame. Literally, you have to decide upon everything, and you don’t get anything for free. You can’t go to a location and simply say, “This looks good,” and shoot there. You have to discuss what kind of trees, is it a railyard, how wide are the tracks, are the tracks new or old? The amount of planning you have to do is just jaw-dropping.
So that part of it I’m not sorry to be away from [laughs]. But there are pleasures to be had in both mediums. With live-action, you’re trying to catch little moments of lightning in a bottle. In animation you’re trying to do that too, but you’re doing it one volt at a time.
EW: I’m looking forward to seeing Tom Cruise dangling from that Dubai skyscraper [the Burj Khalifa].
BB: [laughs] He did dangle! That’s not a special effect.
And it wouldn’t be the same with animation. You could do it, but there wouldn’t be any life and limb being risked.
EW: Or YouTube videos of Tom waving to people inside the building! SOURCE

However, in one of the sequences, which is being shot, Tom Cruise's body double was seen searching for the antagonist Brij Nath, which is being portrayed by Anil Kapoor. Mission Impossible 4-Ghost Protocol also marks Anil Kapoor's entry into mainstream Hollywood, although he appeared in the popular TV series 24 for a good amount of time. Sources at the sets said that the second unit of the film will shoot a major chunk of an action sequences inside and outside Mumbai, which also includes a car chase. Bird's Signature Style is All Over the New 'Mission Impossible' May 5, 2011
Though this may be his first live-action feature, I have absolutely no reservations about Brad Bird, the director behind Pixar's stellar films The Incredibles and Ratatouille, taking on Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. With Tom Cruise returning as Ethan Hunt, and Jeremy Renner being lined up to take over the franchise, there's a lot riding on this sequel. Thankfully, producer J.J. Abrams (who also directed the fantastic Mission Impossible 3) just recently spoke to MTV about Bird's work on the sequel, and it's all good news. Abrams says, "Not only is the movie coming along, but what I've seen is kind of unbelievable." Abrams goes on to talk about how Bird's style, even outside of animation, can clearly be seen in this film:
"It's so weird to watch scenes for a movie by a director that feels so of that director's style, and yet you realize you've never ever seen a live-action film by that director. You watch moments where you go, 'That's so Brad Bird!' And then you realize, oh, it's so weird to have seen a Brad Bird moment with actual flesh and blood actors. He's a filmmaker who has happened to use animation as a medium, but it's his filmmaking and his characters and his rhythm and his comedy, the action he can do, it's just the humanity that he's done that comes through in movies that have happened to be animated. Seeing that kind of nuance in a movie with people is just, I'm just so thrilled to be a part of it all. I haven't seen the whole thing, but what I have seen is sort of mind-blowing."
That's exactly what I wanted to hear about Bird's work as a live-action director, and especially for this new Mission Impossible film. The Incredibles is actually my favorite film from Pixar, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what Bird has brought to this established franchise. The sequel doesn't hit theaters until December 16th of this year, but you can bet the first trailer will be attached to Paramount Pictures summer release of Transformers Dark of the Moon, and I'm hoping that it will get everyone excited.

Paula Patton Talks M:I 4 First signing on last September, Patton will be playing a member of Ethan Hunt's (Tom Cruise) team in the third Mission: Impossible sequel, but not much else is known about her character or the plot. After asking about how her character will fit into the story, Patton admitted that she couldn't answer "80% of the question" due to being sworn to secrecy, but did open up about what the opportunity meant to her and confirmed that the action won't exclusively done by the men in the cast.
"Mission: Impossible came as a surprise. It was an incredible opportunity for me, especially after being pregnant. I got to do all my own stunts. I got to be a very fierce, badass chick, if I can say that. It was a dream come true in many ways to be able to play this character, and she… that’s all I can say! It was great. It was an amazing experience for me."
While the answers were fairly vague, I will say that I'm very happy to hear about Patton getting in on the action for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. After three movies, only Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames have returned for each one, while actresses like Emmanuelle Béart (for obvious reasons), Thandie Newton, Maggie Q, Keri Russell (again, obvious) and Michelle Monaghan have never lasted more through more than one film. Patton is proving herself to be one of the most charismatic and talented young actresses in Hollywood, and it would be great to see her break through that barrier. SOURCE

I thought they had completed shooting?? Either way, I WANT that car (referring to the Mumbai shoot). So the film is showing at Cannes? Didn't that happen already? And lastly, when do we get a trailer My cousin works at Dulles Airport (Virginia) and said that they were shooting for MI down there? She said she saw the whole crew come in (wearing MI:4 hats) and the buzz was that TC was coming down in his private jet.

Mission Impossible - Simon Pegg Discusses Mission Impossible 'Evolution'
21 June 2011 06:51:31
Simon Pegg Discusses Mission Impossible 'Evolution'
'Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol' is an ''evolution'' of the movie franchise, according to Simon Pegg.
'Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol' is an "evolution" of the series.
The fourth film in the action movie series again stars Tom Cruise as action man Ethan Hunt and although the introduction of Jeremy Renner's character Brandt has seen him touted as a successor to Tom, co-star Simon Pegg doesn't see anyone replacing him for some time.
He explained: "Looking at the film as it is, I don't think Jeremy's character will replace Ethan. It's anyone's guess really. It certainly sets up a new IMF agent who can return and who is an Ethan level player. We'll see. I honestly don't know.
"It's one of those things that there's a lot of life in that story because it is a kind of Bond thing that you can just have iterations of different adventures and different teams and stuff. I can't say really. I don't want to give anything away. It's another 'Mission: Impossible' but it's an evolution I think."
Simon was thrilled to reprise his role as Benji Dunn in the action movie series and credits writer J.J. Abrams - who he also worked with on 'Star Trek' - for making sure there was a part for him.
He told Collider.com: "I get on really well with J.J. and we'd always said if there was another 'Mission: Impossible', can Benji come back? It'd be fun for Benji to come back. I had two days on 'Mission: Impossible III'. That was it. I did seven months on the fourth one so yeah, I go back."

Michael Giacchino Talks M:I 4 Q: I have to ask about you working with him again on MI: 4. How is it going on that? Are you scoring?
Giacchino: Not yet. He just had his first cut put together. So I have to see it. I will start working on it really soon. What I have seen so far looks fantastic. It’s like, “Oh, my god! It is like Brad Bird directed a Mission: Impossible movie!” It’s like, “What could you expect?” The imagery, you know? Brad is a wonderful filmmaker especially in the sense of just visuals. He likes big images. He likes it to feel like a movie. He is going to kill me for saying this, but I watched a lot of it. I said, “Oh, my god. It’s as if David Lean directed an action movie with Tom Cruise.” Brad is like, “Stop saying that! Now that is too much pressure for me!” But that is the feeling that I got from just seeing the pieces that I saw. It is ultimately exactly what I wanted it to feel like. When Brad said, “Yes.” to doing this I was like, “Oh, my god. I can’t wait because it is going to feel like…” So I am really excited about that. SOURCE

New US Release Date 12.21.11 e Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol from its Dec. 16, 2011 release date to Wednesday, Dec. 21, putting the picture smack into the holiday corridor. That moves the film back from opening against Warner Bros' Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. It will now open against the David Fincher-directed Sony drama The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and be released two days before Paramount's The Adventures of Tintin, Summit's The Darkest Hour, Fox's We Bought A Zoo, and FilmDistrict's release of the Angelina Jolie-directed In The Land Of Blood And Honey.
At the same time, Paramount will soon formalize a Feb. 8, 2013 release date for One Shot, the Christopher McQuarrie-directed adaptation of the Lee Child mystery novel series that the studio hopes will launch another Cruise franchise. For Paramount, the strategy is to replicate the winter release pattern it followed successfully on Shutter Island, the Dennis Lehane novel that was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
I'm told that Paramount is bullish on the fourth Mission: Impossible installment, which Cruise produced with JJ Abrams. He reprises his role as Ethan Hunt for director Brad Bird, with Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Anil Kapoor, Michael Nyqvist and Tom Wilkinson also starring.
Skydance Productions co-financed and produced both Cruise pictures.

J.J. Abrams Talks About the Status of STAR TREK 2 and His Thoughts on MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL
Posted:August 3rd, 2011
After going to Houston to pick up his son, who just returned from camp in Costa Rica, the hardest working man in show business, J.J. Abrams, actually made his way to the TCA Press Tour party for CBS/The CW/Showtime to support the upcoming CBS drama Person of Interest, premiering on September 22nd and starring Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. While we will run that portion of the interview closer to the show’s premiere, we did want to post the update he gave on the status of Star Trek 2 and his thoughts on Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
According to J.J. Abrams, they’re totally focused on getting all of the important elements together for Star Trek 2 – including the story, the characters, the cast and crew, and the audience – before they worry about pre-production, locations, and the wardrobe and visual effects budgets. He also said that Paramount has been very supportive because everyone involved just wants the movie to be as good as possible, and that he won’t officially decide about signing on as director until everything is in place. In regard to Mission Impossible, he shared some insight about Brad Bird as a director, and what it’s like to work with someone like Tom Cruise, who insists on doing all of his own stunts. Check out what he had to say after the jump:
(Only Ghost Protocol q&a are posted here ..)
As producer, what are your thoughts on Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Brad Bird as the director? Is it the best one in the series?
ABRAMS: I think it’s the best one of the series. I do. First of all, you’ve never seen a live action Brad Bird movie, and yet when you watch it, you go, “This is a Brad Bird movie.” You realize you’ve been watching Brad Bird films that just happen to be animated. It’s really fun. It’s got a fun intensity to it, and that’s Brad. It’s the biggest one, by far, in terms of the stuff that happens in it. Also, there are other things like a portion of it was shot in IMAX and there’s a sequence on the tallest building in the world, the Burj in Dubai, where Tom Cruise did five days worth of wire work outside the building that is so insane, you cannot believe the insurance company let him do it. When you see it on IMAX, it’s terrifying. It’s crazy, what he did. It really is unbelievable. It’s weird to be in meetings with him and think, “That dude was running down the outside of the building!” I’m talking to him, he’s in my office, and he did that. It’s weird. It’s like talking to Buzz Aldrin. You’re like, “That dude was on the moon!”
You could have been the guy who killed Tom Cruise.
ABRAMS: Well, you’re always afraid of that ‘cause Tom wants to do every stunt. But then, when he does it, you realize he can.

Brad Bird Chooses to Accept the 'Mission' It's odd to think that a guy who's been working in Hollywood for over 25 years and has two Oscars sitting on his shelf could ever be considered a "newcomer." But that's the case for Brad Bird who has branched out into directing live action features.
And he didn't just ease into it either. He jumped in headfirst with the big -- and I mean IMAX-sized -- "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol." The movie has Tom Cruise returning to the role of IMF superspy Ethan Hunt for a fourth time. He's joined by Simon Pegg, reprising his character from "M:I3," along with newcomers Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, and two-time Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner.
This new "Mission" movie looks to be just as explosive as each previous installment. I recently was able to speak to Brad Bird about the film, and he told me how the shot of Cruise as Hunt walking away as the Kremlin explodes behind him kicks off the movie with a bang. Plus, he shared why he decided to make his live-action debut with this movie, and just who came up with the notion of hanging Cruise off the tallest building in the world . . . read the rest.
