I absolutely love this poster. Glad this MI poster didn't have TC's profile This image sort of reminds me of the end of Minority Report, with Cruise mysteriously appearing out of the dark in a hoodie (with a bald head).

GHOST PROTOCOL to open in IMAX First Brad Bird is thinking big with his first live-action feature film: A deal is being finalized by Paramount Pictures that will open ”Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” five days early at more than 200 IMAX theaters. The goal, according to the Oscar-winning writer-director of “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille,” is to bring back a “level of showmanship” to the opening of a big-budget Hollywood film. Bird is so enthused about the plan that last week he brought footage from the film to Rave Motion Pictures 18 to show it as preamble to his interview with Hero Complex lead writer Geoff Boucher. The elaborate, high-adrenaline sequences (part of the 25 minutes of the film that was shot with IMAX cameras) took the action to the top of the tallest building in the world and into the face of a blinding desert sandstorm.
GB: So the plan is “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” would open at 3,000 or so theaters on Dec. 21 but on Dec. 16 it will open at IMAX theaters as well a smaller number of “prestige” movie palaces. How difficult was it to make that happen considering the reflexive rigidity of the industry and the protective temperament of theater chain owners?
BB: Man, when you try to change things in the film industry, they do not want to deviate from what the well-worn paths are. We were able to get five days. Every studio likes to have bragging rights to the biggest opening numbers, and the problem is what that does is it perpetuates the approach of getting a zillion prints out there so your opening number is the biggest. But to me that is an intellectual thing. The average viewer doesn’t experience how much money is made on opening weekend. What they experience is their experience. I wanted the first people that see the film to see it big with a sharp image and great sound systems, so when they went out and talked about the movie they saw, we would know that they had seen it at its best.
GB: When you looked at the three previous “Mission” films and you looked at Tom Cruise in them, what were the things that you saw that you liked the most?
BB: One of my favorite moments acting-wise were the scenes he did with Vanessa Redgrave. He kind of came alive in a slightly different way. You could tell he had a lot of respect for Redgrave and knew that he had to be on his game because she was going to get every drop out of her part of the scene so he better get every drop of his. There was a playfulness to those scenes together that I really liked. When you see the film, it’s a little more playful than the other “Mission: Impossible” films — hopefully without undermining the suspense or action. You guys did a thing recently on “Raiders of the Lost Ark” turning 30, and that’s a film that is one of my favorites and I cited it as a really good balance between humor and action. The humor is there but it’s not done in a self-conscious, wink-wink, Roger-Moore-as-James-Bond way, and it doesn’t undercut the action. That’s a tone I was inspired by and wanted to get to some extent in this, but without making it the oddball “Mission: Impossible” that doesn’t feel like it could sit alongside the other ones.

Brad Bird: Tom Cruise Ruined Me for other Actors "He's ruined me for everyone else," says Bird, who makes his live-action directorial debut in December after minting a major Hollywood profile with animation powerhouse Pixar. "I'm not going to understand after this point why any actor doesn't want to do all of their own stunts and hang off of a mile-high building. He truly loves the movies and the movie-making process, and he knows a ton about it but is incredibly polite and shows up on time and has done all of his homework."
Cruise risked life and limb doing the stunt work, and Bird said the veteran actor was both a resource and raconteur on the set, which was valuable considering the tight shooting schedule for the film.
"He's made for movies the way Michael Phelps is built for swimming," two-time Oscar winner Bird said. "You look at the directors he's worked with too, it's a who's who. Scorsese and Kubrick and Spielberg and Oliver Stone — when Oliver Stone was making better movies — and Michael Mann and Sydney Pollack and on and on and on. It's kind of stunning. He's worked with great directors over and over again, and you can engage him in those conversations." SOURCE

From Brad Bird
What keeps Tom Cruise relevant after 30 years in Hollywood? Take this hint from his Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird:
“You look at the directors he’s worked with […] It’s a who’s who. Scorsese and Kubrick and Spielberg and Oliver Stone — when Oliver Stone was making better movies — and Michael Mann and Sydney Pollack and on and on and on. It’s kind of stunning. Not every one of them was a great movie, but he’s worked with great directors over and over again, and you can engage him in those conversations.” Or Paul Thomas Anderson. Or Ridley Scott. Or Brian De Palma. Or John Woo. Or Neil Jordan. Isn’t Quentin Tarantino hiring at the moment? Let’s make that happen. [LAT]

Will Tom Cruise be in Dubai today? (No) According to a release issued by IMAX Melbourne, projectionist Dave Booty is flying to Dubai tonight to screen a special 17-minutes preview for the production team.
The release further states that this is the second time in a year that Booty has received a call from Bad Robot, the production company behind “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”, to fly out to Dubai to be involved in screening the IMAX footage shot for the movie.
The first call Booty received from them was a year ago, after they contacted IMAX Corporation and asked who they could recommend as the best IMAX projectionist in the world.
“It was an honour, but naturally I was excited to be involved in screening the dailies of a feature film shot in IMAX footage,” said Booty in a statement.
He was delighted when Bad Robot contacted him on Sunday and asked him to be involved again. This time Dave was advised that it was on the request of star and producer of “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol”, Cruise himself.
Booty is scheduled to screen the IMAX footage of Cruise scaling Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
The film is set for a December 16 release, with speculation rife that the film is likely to be screened in Mumbai much earlier in December, with Indian actor Anil Kapoor joining Cruise, along with lead star Paula Patton in the city.
Following which, the actors are scheduled to head to Dubai for the film’s world premiere on December 7, say sources. The date also marks the commencement of the Dubai International Film Festival. SOURCE

Batman Footage to Screen before New Mission? A trusted theater (read: exhibitor) source has just exclusively alerted /Film that Warner Bros. plans to attach a six minute prologue to The Dark Knight Rises to all IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Christopher Nolan‘s third film in his Batman trilogy is being released by Warner Bros. and Brad Bird‘s first live action film is Paramount, but the arrangement would certainly be mutually beneficial as Mission: Impossible is the biggest IMAX release of the holiday season. Putting a teaser for The Dark Knight Rises in front of it would certainly drive audiences to that format as opposed to regular theaters.
If this happens, audiences would get their first chance at seeing The Dark Knight Rises footage in IMAX on December 16. That’s because Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is opening exclusively in IMAX five days before its general release, which is on December 21. The exclusive opening is one reason to see the film in IMAX. The full scenes shot in IMAX format are another. And 6 minutes from the most anticipated film of this decade are a serious bonus.
Reached for contact, Warner Bros. declined to comment on this story but First Showing confirmed our report. So what do you think? Odds are you were going to see Mission: Impossible either way, but will you go now specifically for The Dark Knight Rises? SOURCE

The Dark Knight Rises Prologue Confirmed for Mission: Impossible 4 IMAX Showings
| MovieWeb |
Last week, we reported that Warner Bros. Pictures was planning to attach a six-minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises to IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol.
And now, AMC Theatres is confirming the rumor and adds that the prologue will only screen at 70mm IMAX screens and not at digital IMAX locations. Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol will open in IMAX theaters on December 16, five days ahead of its general wide release on December 21. Warner Bros. employed a similar tactic in December 2007, when it attached the opening minutes of The Dark Knight to prints of I Am Legend. The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway,
Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.
Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol comes to theaters December 21st, 2011 and stars Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner, »

New 'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol' featurette: They let Tom Cruise do what!?
Director Brad Bird looks pretty cheerful , considering he’s in charge of keeping one of the world’s biggest stars alive while he leaps, climbs, and dangles off the tallest building in the world. For the fourth installment of Mission: Impossible (no one has yet properly explained to me just what a “ghost protocol” is but I don’t care, I’m in), Tom Cruise apparently must find his inner Spidey and scale the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which stands at 2723 feet (gulp). This stunt really does look death-defyingly cool — lots of tourists caught the action themselves and it even made the local news.
As for Cruise, he looks pretty relaxed in those wires. The film (you can check out the trailer at this board) also stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Paula Patton, and will be in IMAX theaters Dec. 16 and everywhere on Dec. 21.

Brad Bird Reignites Mission: Impossible Few directors take kindly to passersby with video cameras, particularly during a shoot.
In the case of Mission: Impossible— Ghost Protocol (opening Dec. 21), director Brad Bird made an exception.
Bird and star Tom Cruise were in Dubai in November 2010, shooting a scene from the side of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest structure, when Bird noticed bystanders reaching for their phones and cameras.
"At first I was annoyed," Bird says of footage that became a YouTube hit. "Then I thought, 'Hey, at least they'll know that's not a special effect.' That's really Tom hanging there."
Cruise returns for the fourth installment of a franchise that has earned $530 million at the domestic box office and another $1.4 billion overseas. And Bird, director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille, makes his debut in live action.
Bird chose to accept the mission after driving himself nuts trying to fit the historical epic 1906 (due Dec. 12, 2012) "in a movie-sized box. I figured it would probably be healthier for my brain to be making a movie. I wanted one that was gassed up and on the runway."
Bird says he had been wanting to work for years with Cruise and J.J. Abrams, who directed the third Mission: Impossible film and produces this one. Bird says he wants to add a psychological component to Protocol.
"One of the biggest successes of the last Mission: Impossible was that it dealt more with the characters' personal feelings. I like that," he says.
But don't Bird wrong. "We're not doing a Pinter play. There's a lot of action."
Action, shot partially in IMAX, that dangled Cruise from more than one skyscraper. Bird met with a crew coordinator regularly to map out the movie's stunts to ensure they would maintain the series' action bar, if not raise it.
"I said, 'These all look good, but it probably needs to be more intense,' '' Bird says. "The guy says 'Don't worry, it'll be more intense when Tom does it.' " SOURCE
