'Jack Reacher’ Being Eyed As Franchise, While Viacom Chief Signals Death Of Original Ideas At Paramount
Eylül 19, 2012 4:57 PM
To say that Paramount is having a pretty horrible 2012, which unfortunately coincides with their 100th anniversary, would be an understatement. With two movies bumped to 2013 -- "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" -- while "World War Z" goes through a pretty public and ugly reshoot and rewrite process to try and salvage a picture that currently is only half good and has Brad Pitt and director Marc Forster at odds, it's no surprise honchos are looking to find any silver lining they can. And it looks like Tom Cruise may be that hope.
Of course, he's already anchoring their mega-successful "Mission: Impossible" franchise, but later this year he'll kick ass in "Jack Reacher" in what should be another blockbuster-sized hit. And eager to capitalize on it is Paramount parent Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, who told investors at the Goldman Sachs Annual Communacopia Conference that he’s “hoping to create new franchise” out of the character and books. Well, duh. Way back in May when the title was officially changed from "One Shot" to "Jack Reacher," we predicted as much. The movie is based on the book by Lee Child, and every entry in the series is stamped "A Jack Reacher Novel." Basically, "Jack Reacher" allows audiences to get to know the name while allowing for potential future movies to be branded "Jack Reacher: [Put Book Title Here]" or whatever.
But perhaps the most interesting nugget out of that conference comes from Dauman's revelation about the future Paramount slate. With "Jack Reacher," "Jack Ryan," "Star Trek," "G.I. Joe," and "Transfomers" as arguably the biggest properties on their slate, he reveals that essentially, originality is going to be tossed out the window. “We reduced the number of releases to about 15 a year and focused on existing franchises, developing new franchises, and developing our brands,” he told investors, which is basically another way of saying they are playing things mostly very, very safe and predictable.
Just to make that clear: franchises, franchises, brand. Ugh. We can't say we're really surprised because that's the direction major studios are going these days, preferring to bet a few big horses, rather than the approach they had back in the day in which mid-sized movies also had a chance to shine. But that's the way things are blowing these days, at least until a few of these expensive movies tank hard and spending $50 million on a movie instead of $150 million looks attractive again. But for now, it looks like there will be even more Cruise/Reacher to come as part of the studio's franchise/franchise/brand approach. [

Someone should point out to Mr. Jagernauth that JACK REACHER is one of those "$50 million movies" he's pining for. Guess he was too busy painting with that broad brush of his.

Actress Talks Working with Cruise Ann Arbor resident Nicole Forester gets to go to work and don a new life, a different persona and sometimes a drastic new role - one week she's the wife of an up-and-coming political candidate, the next a victim of a sniper's bullet.
But, then again, that's the life of an actress.
Forester's next film, and perhaps biggest silver screen role, is that of Nancy Holt in the upcoming action crime drama "Jack Reacher," starting [Tom] Cruise. Forester is one of five victims killed by a military-trained sniper and homicide investigator Jack Reacher (Cruise) investigates the murders to see if there's a larger conspiracy linking the victims.
"I am one of those people you see get shot (at the beginning) and then over the course of the film, you see flashbacks of her life and who she was," Forester said. "Tom's character is trying to connect the dots."
Forester said working with actors like Cruise and Grammer was nerve-racking at first, but the actors' professionalism and courtesies helped to calm her.
"They're great for a reason," she said. "They're not only great at what they do, they're great people. That's what makes them a pleasure to work with. I always approached with caution and hesitation at first because I don't want to intrude on their space. But both of them are very gracious and inclusive."
One highlight to her role in "Jack Reacher," Forester said, was working with Cruise, who is "a little easy on the eyes."
"He was very kind and went out of his way to be very chivalrous to me," she said. "I'm grateful that I was able to be a part of it. I'm looking forward to the premier in December." SOURCE

The Jack Reacher Author Lee Child Talks Tom Cruise, werner Herzog ...Empire online RobD: I would like to know where the inspiration for Jack Reacher came from. Ancient history. The medieval sagas, the Anglo-Saxon poems, Scandinavian legends, all the way up through the Westerns, it's all the same character. Nar: Will Reacher ever be killed off? Are there any other characters you want to franchise for? No other characters, but yeah. Instead of letting the series fizzle out, he will die gruesomely in the last installment. bbc: You must have known after the successful reception and growing fan base that at some point your books were going to be made into films. Did it impact or change the way you wrote and structured them? No, because my instinct was that you've either got to do one thing or the other, or you get a bad screenplay and a bad book. Timon: Lee, what did you make of the Clive Cussler/Crusader Entertainment/Paramount debacle and ensuing lawsuit? Was Cussler right to demand it be done his way or should an author sit down and shut up when he's being paid for his works? The longish answer? You've got to think carefully before you sign on the dotted line, which is what Clive should have done. Once the production's underway, you've just got to sit there and take it. He was unwise to turn to lawyers. Better just to close his eyes and shut up. Rgirvan44: How involved were you in the script writing process, and how did you find the Hollywood machine when it came to adapting your work? I didn't want to be involved at all, because I've done it for other pieces of work, and you need a kind of callous brutality that you can't do to yourself. I found McQuarrie's screenplay to be excellent. He’s obviously subtracted things from the book, but he's added nothing that wasn't there. Gareth: Did Lee have a particular real life person in mind when first imagining Reacher's physical appearance, or indeed his personality? No. An amalgam of a thousand different snippets of influence. His physical appearance, I would think, is closest to Lawrence Dallaglio. Rhys: My girlfriend is hoping Jack will settle down, get married and give up drifting. Please tell her this won't happen. OK. This will not happen. Nar: I read the short story, 'The Bodyguard'. Do you enjoy creating new characters or does Reacher signify the pinnacle of coolness for you? Short stories are always a welcome break; there's nothing at stake, no upside, no downside, so we can relax. But Reacher will always be the main man. Quentin_Cappucino: There's an almost forensic level of detail to the fight scenes in your novels. Did you have to do a lot of research into the human anatomy, or did you know that stuff already? I remember it from primary school. Rhys: Would you ever do a Stephen King and sell the short story rights for $1? I just did. The short story Second Son, I took a one dollar advance. It was an experiment and it went quite well. If I do it again, I'll take more than a buck. Mr E: Which has been your favourite Reacher novel to write? The third one, Trip Wire. I was still full of energy, but I'd figured out how to do it. RobD: Do you really think that Tom Cruise is a good pick for playing Jack Reacher and how is the book going to translate to the film? Reacher doesn't say much, will you be involved in any capacity? They're very generous and inclusive, and I'm full included if not involved. From what I've seen so far, Tom will do a fine job. The early rehearsals and the read-through have been stunning. Dan: Reacher's head clock - love it! Can people actually do that or is it just a brilliant device to cut down on the things he carries with him? No, I can do it. It comes from 18 years in live television, where time was all we had. I know the time of day, and I can also do durations to the second. Rama: What are the five other authors you'd recommend to fans of your books? Gosh. I would say Robert Crais, Michael Connelly, Joseph Kanon, Tess Gerritsen and Dennis Lehane. You can read the rest here : www.empireonline.com/interviews/interview.asp?IID=1359

Doesn't look like Lee Child fans have much faith in Cruise, seeing how he doesn't match the physical description. But Cruise has been surprising people in the past, so here's hoping folks give this one a chance before writing it off completely.

Tom Cruise Worked Through The Night Training For Jack Reacher
Tom Cruise proved his dedication to new movie Jack Reacher by working through the night training for the upcoming action film.
The Top Gun star plays the titular homicide investigator in the new drama alongside Rosamund Pike, who portrays his lawyer side-kick, and the actress reveals the 50 year old was so dedicated to the part he returned to the set after-hours to hone his skills.
She tells Us Weekly magazine, "He would shoot all day, maybe get one hour of sleep, then go back to work. I would get up in the middle of the night to go to the set just to watch him do his sequences."
And the Die Another Day beauty admits Cruise's toned physique presented a major distraction as a result.
She adds, "We were in a motel, trying to get business done - and he has his shirt off. It's distracting! I tell him, 'Put your shirt on!'"

Tom Cruise's New Movie Re-cut For Lower Rating In Britain
Film bosses cut two violent scenes from Tom Cruise's upcoming thriller Jack Reacher to secure a less restrictive age rating in Britain.
Movie regulators in the U.K. were set to slap the drama with a 15 classification, meaning viewers aged 14 and under would not be able to see the blockbuster.
However, distributors were keen to land a 12A rating to open the film up to a younger audience and sought advice from regulators - and as a result, they cut several gory scenes out of the final edit.
A statement from the British Board of Film Classification (Bbfc) reads, "Company chose to reduce two moments of violence (a woman being suffocated by a man and a man being hit over the head with a rock) in order to achieve a 12A classification. Cuts made in accordance with Bbfc Guidelines and policy. An uncut 15 classification was available."
Cruise serves as a producer on the Christopher MCQuarrie-directed movie, which also stars Rosamund Pike and is set for release next month (Dec12).

Tom Cruise returning [to Pittsburgh] for 'Jack Reacher' Premiere Tom Cruise is returning to Pittsburgh in mid-December and he's bringing the trappings of a swanky Hollywood premiere with him. It will be Pittsburgh's first major film premiere in decades, at least, and a rare round trip for a star with such box-office muscle.
Mr. Cruise, along with fellow actors Robert Duvall, Rosamund Pike and David Oyelowo, are expected in Pittsburgh on Dec. 15 for the U.S. premiere of "Jack Reacher," known as "One Shot" during filming here in fall 2011 and early 2012.
Also scheduled to attend the Saturday afternoon event are director Christopher McQuarrie and novelist Lee Child, whose presence should confirm his stamp of approval of Mr. Cruise as the ex-military investigator Jack Reacher.
Paramount Pictures plans to take over the SouthSide Works Cinema -- all 10 screens and 1,659 seats -- for the 2 p.m. showing on Dec. 15.
An ad in the Dec. 6 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette will provide details on how to win seats. No tickets will be sold for the event, which will feature a red carpet and entertainment for fans outside and international and national media.
"We had an extraordinary experience shooting in Pittsburgh. The local crew was fantastic and the city was unbelievably accommodating," said Mr. McQuarrie, the Oscar-winning writer of "The Usual Suspects."
"We felt very welcome -- even with all the noise we made."
"The Pittsburgh Film Office is thrilled and excited that Paramount Pictures is going to host the U.S. premiere of 'Jack Reacher,' " director Dawn Keezer said last week. "We've never, in the history of the film office, had an event like this, and it's a great way to recognize the incredible growth of the film industry in the last several years which, I think, can really point to the success of the film tax-credit program."
"By all indications, and according to the conversation I had with Mr. Cruise, he loved his experience in Pittsburgh and thinks Pittsburgh is going to look amazing on film," Ms. Keezer said. "It's nice that he wants to come and thank the city and the region by hosting this event in Pittsburgh.
