Lee Child: On Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher, and Passing the Baton The Reacher books were a be-careful-what-you-wish-for proposition for Hollywood. At first glance: bestsellers, a popular central character, plenty of action and incident, and plenty of sequel possibility. A no-brainer. But at second glance, there were three problems . . .

McQuarrie Talks Reacher with Film Journal McQuarrie, an Oscar winner for his script for 1995’s The Usual Suspects, also had to meet the expectations of Reacher fans. "There are people for whom the movie will never be and could never be what they fully imagined it to be," he admits. "There's nothing I could really do to please them, and at a certain point I made friends with that. But there are the fans who are willing to accept a certain amount of latitude so long as we protect what makes the books really great, which is Reacher's character, tone and attitude."
In the books. Reacher is six feet, five inches tall and 250 pounds. But McQuarrie considers size just one of the dimensions to the character. "Physical stature is not nearly as important to me as personality—his confidence and mind," the director says. "Frankly, Reacher's physical size was never going to be an asset on the screen. What I love about him is that he's utterly pragmatic. There's no flash, no ego, no bravado."
The director is also fascinated by the way Reacher lives. "It's not an easy choice, it's not an easy way to live," McQuarrie says. "I walked away from this movie with a sort of drumbeat in my head that 'freedom is a discipline.' In this day and age, freedom is something you really have to work at."
Reacher is very different from the typical Cruise role. McQuarrie gave this approach to the actor: "I said, 'Tom, look, in every movie you've done you play a character who's under extreme pressure. Reacher is someone who does not experience pressure. Is that the sort of character you're interested in playing?' And Tom looked at me and just sort of relaxed into the idea. I think Reacher was someone that he had been longing to play, someone who is more akin to who he is in a difficult situation . . . read the rest.

Aussie actor stars opposite Tom Cruise Australian actor Jai Courtney was ready for TV stardom two years ago when he was one of two actors being considered to star in an American series. He lost the job, he recalls with a chuckle, ''because an executive said I had a bad-guy face!'' The 26-year-old Sydney native can afford to laugh now, because his Hollywood break finally came, playing the villain opposite Tom Cruise in the upcoming blockbuster Jack Reacher. ''It's ironic, I know,'' he adds with a grin. ''Maybe that guy was right!''
The actor had only worked in two episodes of All Saints and Packed to the Rafters when he won the role of Varro in Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Sitting in a Hollywood hotel today, Courtney recalls how surreal it was to find himself in below-freezing Pittsburgh in the pouring rain to film fight scenes with one of Hollywood's biggest stars.
''I got there thinking, 'Shit, I'm going to have to face off with Tom Cruise!','' Courtney says. ''But Tom was an incredibly generous guy who worked harder than anybody else on set, and he really took me under his wing.''
Courtney also sheepishly admits he got to share in the perks, too: ''Tom had a hot tub to warm up in between takes, so we both went to the hot tub and then we'd hop out and have to wait for the steam to go away before we could get back to shooting.' THE REST

A Big Name Steps Into Big Shoes JACK REACHER, the itinerant head-butting hero of Lee Child’s best-selling series of crime thrillers, has finally made it to the big screen. An adaptation of Mr. Child’s 2005 novel “One Shot,” retitled “Jack Reacher,” written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise, opens on Dec. 21.
What took them so long? The Reacher books have been appearing yearly since 1997, and if ever a literary property seemed a no-brainer for the movies, it’s this one. The books have a strong, original central character and taut, linear narratives, full of action and incident; they often feature strong female characters and are surprisingly popular among women; and there are lots of them — 17 titles so far, outnumbering even the original James Bond novels.
Mr. McQuarrie, who has worked on several Cruise-related projects, knows his way around Hollywood and has a very simple explanation for why it took so long to get a Reacher film made. “There are no transforming robots,” he said in a telephone interview. “There is no paranormal activity.”
He added: “The problem is that Jack Reacher is not 22, and he doesn’t have superpowers. He appears in novels that are detective thrillers, and that’s a sort of movie they don’t make anymore. How do you market it?”

Cruise takes in Manchester derby
Tom Cruise saw Manchester City's bid to retain their Premier League crown become almost mission impossible at the Manchester derby.
The Hollywood star travelled to the Etihad Stadium to watch the crunch match between champions City and the current leaders of the Barclays Premier League, Manchester United. United won 3-2.
Always a maverick, the American actor said he had been watching English football since the Eighties and predicted a "great game" between the top two. "This is the first game that I've seen in England," Cruise said on Sky Sports 1. "I've been following it since the Eighties so I'm just excited that I'm able to be here."
The Jerry Maguire actor is friends with David Beckham and he revealed the former England captain had sent him a message ahead of the game. "He wishes he was here. I got an email from him, he's jealous that I'm here," Cruise added.
Apocalypse Now actor Robert Duvall was also at the game, but appeared to be a little rusty on the rules. He said: "Will there be a shootout today? No. If it's a tie? No." SOURCE
