Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Help were the two biggest hits of August, and probably the two biggest surprises of the summer. They have one thing in common: David Oyelowo. That visibility will lead to at least one more high-profile gig, as Oyelowo is in final negotiations to star opposite Tom Cruise One Shot. Cruise will play Jack Reacher, the character created by Lee Child for a series of crime novels. In One Shot, the ex-Army cop “gets sucked into the mystery surrounding the arrest of a sniper accused of killing five random people in a shooting.” Rosamund Pike will play Cruise’s love interest. According to Variety, Oyelowo will play “a veteran homicide detective investigating the mall sniping.”
Christopher McQuarrie is on board to direct from his own adapted screenplay this fall in Pittsburgh. McQuarrie has previously written for Cruise before on Valkyrie and the upcoming Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol.
Paramount has scheduled One Shot for release on February 8, 2013.

Robert Duvall in talks to Join Cast The cast of Christopher McQuarrie‘s adaptation of Lee Child‘s novel One Shot is looking pretty good. Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher, an ex-military cop who is called upon to assist the prime suspect in a series of sniper murders. Rosamund Pike plays a young defense lawyer who is also roped into the case; Richard Jenkins plays the DA trying to prosecute the sniper. David Oyelowo is a cop on the case, and Alexia Fast has a small role as a local girl with a tangential role in the story.
And now Robert Duvall has taken the call to play a small role. That role isn’t revealed, but there are two possibilities that quickly come to mind, and one of those is the villain.
Variety reports and says “Details about Duvall’s character weren’t revealed and though it is a small role, insiders say it is significant to Reacher’s story line.”
My first guess is that Duvall is playing a guy named Cash, an aging ex-marine who runs the firing range where the primary suspect in the story liked to shoot. Not a big character, but in the book, at least, there is a significant encounter between Cash and Reacher that demonstrates a lot of Reacher’s military prowess. Seeing Duvall face off with Cruise in that context would be pretty solid.
Duvall could also be playing the shadowy villain of the story, a battered old guy known only as the Zec. He’s not seen very much in the novel, but certainly has a strong presence. Duvall would be powerful in that role, and could give it some depth just through performance — that will be very necessary given how little screen time that character is likely to have. SOURCE

Lee Child Explains Tom Cruise's Casting
Exclusive: The Jack Reacher author talks 29 September 2011
There's a new Empire out today, with Rooney Mara (as Lisbeth Salander) and Daniel Craig (as Mikael Blomkvist) on the front for David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – but inside, there's also a great interview with the man behind Jack Reacher, Lee Child, whose novel, One Shot, is set to hit the big screen in 2013, starring Tom Cruise.
We don't want to spoil the whole thing for you, but here are couple of snippets from our tête-à-tête with the best-selling author, concentrating on his opinion of Tom Cruise's casting as the unstoppable man mountain that is Jack Reacher.
"I wasn't surprised [by Cruise's casting] because this was on the cards for a very long time... we've been dealing with his people for six years."
"Obviously, Tom Cruise doesn't match the physical description of Reacher in the books... but the movie is not going to match the book anyway. More than that though, which actor does match Reacher physically? What people forget is that Tom Cruise is quite possibly the best actor of his generation."
But how will Child's Reacher compare to the screen version? Does he expect vast differences – outside of Tom Cruise playing someone who's 6ft 5in?
"If you look at what McQuarrie [One Shot's screenwriter, whose previous work includes The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie] and Cruise have done before, I think this Reacher will be more clinical – the scapel rather than the sledgehammer."
"I think fans of the books will go to the movie and be a little weirded out for the first five minutes, but then the question is, what will happen after the first five minutes? If it's as done as well as I hope it will be, I don't think it will be a problem."

Assuming he could drop the accent, Courtney might have made a good Jack Reacher.

"What about Cruise?
He's aiiiiiiiiight. It's better to have someone who can act vs someone who fits the suit, but it's best to have both.
Of course, a version starring JC would make $0 so you pick your battles.

Werner Herzog joins One Shot Werner Herzog has come on as the villain in Paramount and Skydance's "One Shot" starring Tom Cruise.
Herzog will play The Zec, an ex-prisoner of war who arranges and stages the killing and is the head of the conspiracy. "One Shot" is the first major acting role for the German auteur, aside from cameos and an occasional voice-over work on "The Simpsons."
Sources say that McQuarrie had always wanted to work with the auteur, and after meeting with Herzog, he saw the opportunity to do so with his latest project. SOURCE
