Zambello advises National Opera as Domingo departs
May 25, 2011, 10:04 AM EST WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington National Opera is announcing that Francesca Zambello has been appointed the company's artistic adviser as famed tenor Placido Domingo steps down after 15 years with the opera.
The appointment approved Wednesday by the opera's board comes as the company merges with the Kennedy Center to provide stability after years of financial struggles.
Zambello is a respected director in both opera and musical theater. Currently, she is directing a new production of Wagner's "Ring" cycle for the San Francisco Opera. The production originated with the Washington National Opera, but it was unable to finish the cycle because of financial troubles. Zambello also directed Broadway's "The Little Mermaid."
She says she wants to broaden the opera's programming to reach the widest audience, including tourists visiting Washington's cultural attractions.

Serin, I REALLY admire Renée Fleming. She CAN be absolutely DIVINE. ( I wish she'd give those Leoncavallo "Boheme"arias a rest though. Not for nothing we haven't heard them that often. lol) I have been THRILLED by her singing, and alternately INFURIATED. I hate it when she just "phones it in"..like a Strauss 4 last songs a few years back in the proms? She could have been singing the phone book. Made me want to JUMP up and SMACK her. ;D But THEN, there was her Thäis in Paris in which she was SUPERB in EVERY way. She is a very nice person too. I am glad you had a good time.

'Phantom of the Opera' at 25 offers a special show
Sept. 30, 2011, 4:42 AM EST NEW YORK (AP) -- Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" will celebrate its 25th anniversary this weekend with a lavish birthday party that will certainly involve someone swinging from a chandelier. Producers will broadcast on Sunday a live performance of the show from London's 5,500-seat Royal Albert Hall to movie houses in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Japan and Australia. The live performance — one of three shows at the hall — will be followed by rebroadcasts to cinemas on Oct. 5, 6 and 11. "To celebrate such an extraordinary event as 25 years, we wanted to do something special, above and beyond just another gala performance," producer Cameron Mackintosh said in an interview from London. "We both thought that the most theatrical space with a number of seats was the Royal Albert Hall." I cannot believe that the music score of THE ARTIST was stolen from Htichcock's VERTIGO.. I knew there were some discussions going on but I have only recently realized what it was about.. ý did not know that and kept thinking what a great music score THE ARTIST had.. I am very disappointed and I think all the beautiful score could been stolen from different sources.. Here is the VERTIGO love scene score of THE ARTIST Here is the original score by Bernard Hermann for VERTIGO
