Jerry Bruckheimer On Plans For "Top Gun 2" and "The Lone Ranger"
17 May 2011 /nbc washington.com Super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s ready to take audiences back to “Top Gun” flight school, and he’s hoping Maverick still feels the need for speed. With “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stanger Tides,” the latest sequel to one of his other blockbuster properties, hitting theaters this week, Bruckheimer tells PopcornBiz exclusively that he’s in the process of seriously developing a follow-up to the iconic 1986 film that made Tom Cruise a mega-star – and he wants Cruise in a Navy flight suit again. “We're just trying to make a deal right now – It's difficult with all the parties who've been so successful since 'Top Gun,' so it's much harder,” Bruckheimer tells PopcornBiz, but he’s committed to convincing Cruise to sign on in some significant capacity. “I think you'd want Tom to do it – at least, I would. It would be hard for me to make it without him.” Bruckheimer explains that he’s working on lining up the details before commissioning a screenplay, which he says will incorporate all the modern-day bells and whistles of 21st Century Naval air combat. “We haven't done our research enough to know [what the new techniques are] – and we research the hell out of these things,” he says, “so we'd have to go down and see what the Navy's doing and what's going on in their world. And then I'll get a better sense where we're going to take it.” Bruckheimer’s also looking to revamp the classic Western character “The Lone Ranger,” with Johnny Depp taking on the role of Tonto, and Armie Hammer reportedly being circled as Depp’s silver bullet-toting kemosabe. www.nbcwashington.com/blogs/popcornbiz/Jerry-Bruckheimer-On-Plans-For-Top-Gun-2-and-The-Lone-Ranger-121916844.html

Cruise Talking to WB about Leading Liman's Latest First it was Ryan Gosling. Then, Brad Pitt. Now another heavy-hitting Hollywood leading man's name is being bandied about for Doug Liman's futuristic trip ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, and that name is Tom Cruise.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cruise is talking to Warner Bros. about playing the lead role in Liman's film, which is sort of like SOURCE CODE with aliens. Based on the 2004 Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the story is told from the first person point of view of the protagonist Keiji Kiriya. Keiji is a new recruit in the United Defense Force, fighting against the mysterious creatures called 'Mimics' which have laid siege to Earth. Keiji is killed on his first sortie, but through some inexplicable phenomenon wakes up having returned to the day before the battle, only to find himself caught in a time loop as his death and resurrection repeats time and time again. Keiji's skills as a soldier grows as he passes through the time loops trying to change his fate.
It was less than a month ago that Pitt's name came up for ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, although of course it was just "talk", as this is. Gosling's name was mentioned back in November of last year, but obviously the young actor has his hands full currently with no less than two Nicolas Winding Refn films.
No matter who ends up taking the lead, one positive piece of info has emerged from the fray: That awful title appears to be history. However, the new title is WE MORTALS ARE, and frankly, that's not a whole lot better... But I'll take it over the former, don't know about you... SOURCEWell, since you asked Interwebs, I prefer the title ALL YOU NEED IS KILL.

Tom Cruise May Play A Space Soldier In Doug Liman's We Mortals Are
2011-10-10
Doug Liman, a director picking up projects right and left, has been eyeing for his next project All You Need Is Kill, an adaptation of a manga comic about a soldier fighting an outer-space battle who's constantly brought back, Groundhog Day-style, to the day before he died. If it sounds like the kind of risky, expensive project that needs a star to sell it, you're right-- when Liman first started shaping up All You Need Is Kill, Warner Bros. was hoping Brad Pitt would agree to the lead role. Now it seems they've changed focus, but it's still an A-lister on deck-- THR reports that they're now talking to Tom Cruise.
Apparently Cruise had been considered in some earlier stage of development, and now he's back in consideration for the project, which has been retitled We Mortals Are for now (though that's a title that seems to be begging for another change). THR's news is part of a piece on Cruise's sudden new relevance in Hollywood, which is hard to deny-- with One Shot going into production as a potential new franchise starter, and Mission: Impossible-- Ghost Protocol coming this December, the industry is clearly investing a lot in a 49-year-old actor who hasn't had a giant hit since Mission: Impossible III in 2006. Their list of reasons for Cruise's staying power are pretty understandable-- he's reliable, he's still a big name, he works hard, and he's still doing a ton of his own stunts even when his body probably is no position to handle it. We Mortals Are sounds like another physically challenging role, so maybe Cruise is just trying to get in all his jumping and fighting before some key body part gives out for good.
Forget the fact that a guy Cruise's age is not at all what you think of when you think of soldiers, or that it might be smarter to start building new action stars rather than exhuming the same old ones over and over. Cruise can get movies made, and while we continue to give him that power, he's still going to show up in them. And come on-- don't you get the sneaking suspicion that Mission: Impossible-- Ghost Protocol is going to be awesome and make us all happy to have Cruise back again?

Move Over Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise Up for 'All You Need is Kill'?
Last week Brad Pitt was the name making the rounds for Doug Liman's new sci-fi project All You Need is Kill. It turns out that film has not only received a new title, We Mortals Are, but Warner Bros. has actor Tom Cruise in mind for the lead and are involved in negotiations with him, THR reported.
The studio apparently had trouble getting the story of a young soldier in a futuristic war, who relives the same gruesome battle over and over, day after day (similar to Groundhog Day) in motion. Swap the young soldier with a veteran officer in script rewrites and your movie possibly nets Tom Cruise as its headliner.
The premise for We Mortals Are is a solid one for a sci-fi action film, and Liman has directed great films in the past: The Bourne Identity, Fair Game, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Swingers. Plus, despite being kind of an annoying goof ball in the real world (lol), Cruise is still one of my favorite action stars. I really like this role for him, especially given the futuristic backdrop of it.
Of course, being in talks or negotiations doesn't automatically mean Cruise will end up taking the part. He also has previous commitments to star in One Shot, which is currently filming and director Joe Kosinski's follow-up to TRON: Legacy, Oblivion that's due to start production in mid-2012.
I'm still interested in the movie, regardless if Cruise joins or not.

I read this in a local website amd checked..Here is the news onExaminer :
Tom Cruise and Tony Scott ready to make a ‘Top Gun’ sequel
December 10, 2011 - Is anyone else ready to fly into the danger zone again? Tom Cruise has recently announced on Dec. 8 that Top Gun 2 is in the works
Those in the Oklahoma City area can pre-order their tickets here.
I am not sure how many fans are excited about it but Tony Scott, the man who directed the original film, is pretty excited about it. Scott said he is not interested in a remake or a reinvention. He wants to do a completely new movie. He also said it would show the end of the line for fighter pilots.
"I'm not waiting for a script. I'm going to do my homework,” Scott said. “These computer geeks -- these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night."
It’s an interesting new direction for the franchise indeed. It retains the high flying gung ho attitude of the first movie but eliminates all the danger.
"I hope we can figure this out to go do it again," Cruise said when asked about the possibility. "If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot TOP GUN."
Is it time for Maverick to “fly” again?

Tom Cruise Taking Flight In Top Gun 2

Tom Cruise Taking Flight In Top Gun 2
Tom Cruise has confirmed longrunning rumours he's flying back to the big screen for a sequel to 1986 aviation classic Top Gun.
Plans for a follow-up to the hit film began to take shape last year (10) when Tony Scott revealed he was returning to the franchise to direct a new installment, while the Hollywood actor was rumoured to be interested in reprising his role as pilot Maverick, albeit in a smaller part.
But Cruise has now revealed he's officially on board the project.
When asked about Top Gun 2, the star tells Mtv News, "We're working on it.
"I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since Days of Thunder (in 1990). We never thought that we would do it again. Then, they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow... what we could do now...'"
Cruise insists the film is still in the early stages of production, but he's hopeful their plans will take flight: "I hope we can figure this out to go do it again. If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot Top Gun."
If Top Gun 2 gets the go-ahead, it won't be the only franchise Cruise will be involved in - he's also preparing to release the new Mission: Impossible installment, titled Ghost Protocol.

LES GROSSMAN MOVIE UPDATE
In case you were worried about Tom Cruise‘s future projects and especially his Tropic Thunder character, we’re here to calm you down.
Les Grossman will be back, and Cruise will reprise his role in a spin-off movie.
That’s exactly what screenwriter Michael Bacall revealed in an interview with Collider and as usual, he added some quite interesting details about the whole thing.
So, Bacall revealed that Paramount has the draft, and added:
“I gather that they’re pretty happy with it. I think Tom Cruise probably has a lot of stuff on his plate right now and I think it’ll be a schedule thing more than anything.”
As we already guessed, the movie will be R-rated and here’s why: “I wrote it for R because we had precedent with Tropic Thunder.
It’s actually a pretty heartfelt story. I had a lot of meetings with Mr. Cruise and Mr. Stiller and it was crazy, it was a blast. I think we came up with some really fun stuff to give you an insight into who the guy is, so I’m hopeful that that’ll get up and running soon.”
Guess now we’ll have to wait for Cruise to finish his work on One Shot, which is currently filming, and then he’ll be busy with Doug Liman’s All You Need Is Kill where he’s also attached to star.
Which leads us to Less Grossman movie sometime in…2014?
We’ll keep an eye on it!

Screenwriter Michael Bacall Updates On The Les Grossman Biopic With Tom Cruise
[/URL] Back in 2008, Tom Cruise shocked the world when he threw on a fat suit, a bald cap, a fake beard and some gnarly chest hair to play fictional movie executive Les Grossman in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder. But it wasn't just the shock factor that made the performance so memorable - it was the fact that it was absolutely hilarious. In fact, the audience response to the character was so positive that Paramount Pictures announced that they would be developing a fictional biopic about the life and times of Les Grossman. That was back in 2010, though, and we haven't heard much about the project since. Fortunately I had the opportunity to sit down with screenwriter Michael Bacall this afternoon, who has both Project X and 21 Jump Street coming out in the next few weeks and he was kind enough to offer me some updates. As things stand, there is currently a draft of the project over at Paramount, but what's slowing things down a bit is the availability of Tom Cruise. But while Bacall says that he doesn't know when or if it will get made, the experience left a mark on him. "That was a really enjoyable process for me because I got to meet with [Cruise] several times and I got to meet with Ben Stiller several times, and these are guys who have incredible filmmaking knowledge and have been around," Bacall said. "They’re really intelligent, they had some really, really great ideas and I think we came up with something really fun and surprisingly emotional for a character who comes off as kind of a raging asshole in Tropic Thunder." The writer says that the biopic will dig a bit deeper into the character and find some heart while also keeping that "explosive quality" that made the character so memorable from the start. There is a unique problem that the movie could potentially face, however, and that's the issue of making the movie too restrictive and inaccessible for larger audiences. Bacall said that they did recognize it as a potential issue, and says that the trick was to come up "with a couple of really fun moments that wouldn’t be too inside for people to really grasp, but feel inside enough to be authentic." That authenticity is fueled by research that Bacall did to prepare for the project, reading books like James B. Stewart's Disney War and even talking with Cruise. "I think that’s good to have that as a background, and, you know, Tom has a lot of knowledge about studio politics." As a big fan of Tropic Thunder I really do hope that this movie is eventually made and Michael Bacall's involvement actually has a lot to do with that. While he's best known for writing the amazing Edgar Wright film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, 21 Jump Street has been getting a ton of great buzz and could be one of the biggest surprises of the spring. Stay tuned her on Cinema Blend for the rest of my interview with the writer. cinemablend.com

Peter Craig has been hired to write Top Gun 2.
The scribe, who previously penned the screenplay for The Town with Ben Affleck, will start from scratch on the highly-anticipated project, Variety reports.
X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were reportedly commissioned to write Top Gun 2 last year, but it is believed that they had not in fact started work on the movie.
Original star Tom Cruise and director Tony Scott will likely be involved in the sequel.
In December 2011, Cruise suggested that he would have "fun" starring in a Top Gun sequel.
The actor previously hinted late last year that a Top Gun sequel was in the works, adding that he would be happy to star in the film if the plot is right.
I thought Tom did not like making sequels ??

Tom Cruise movie to reveal Les Grossman's 'inner rage'
Film based on foul-mouthed Tropic Thunder character moving closer to production, screenwriter Michael Bacall reveals
Tom Cruise appeared in character as Les Grossman with Jennifer Lopez at the 2010 MTV movie awards. Photograph: Matt Sayles/AP Tom Cruise's long-awaited Les Grossman movie looks set to be moving closer to production after screenwriter Michael Bacall revealed he is working on a script which will reveal where the snarling, foul-mouthed, bottom-slapping studio exec's inner rage really comes from.
Grossman first entered the public consciousness when Tom Cruise pulled on a bald wig, dark glasses, padding and a large amount of bling to play him in the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder. Cruise revived the character for a duet with Jennifer Lopez at the 2010 MTV movie awards and revealed at the time that a big screen outing was in the works. Now Bacall has opened up about his plans for the movie.
"I think people would be disappointed if that character didn't carry around that explosive rage that we associate with him, and that's what makes his performance so enjoyable," the screenwriter told the Hollywood Reporter. "But none of us feel like the movie could sustain what was a 90-minute Les Grossman tirade. So we want to try and get a little bit of a glimpse of where that rage is coming from. The guy will be a force of nature, but we want to have some kind of emotional connection to him."
Bacall, who also wrote Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim Vs the World and the upcoming 21 Jump Street film, said he was excited about Grossman's potential as a lead character, despite the movie producer having only appeared briefly in Tropic Thunder. "I felt really great about that from the beginning because I loved the character," he said. "Tom had an incredible idea on how to tell this story, and give it some real emotion and heart. And as soon as he hit on that idea, it was off to the races. But I feel really good about that project, and I hope that it will happen."
Cruise himself is on a career upturn after Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol became the highest-grossing film in the four-movie spy series earlier this year. The action film, directed by Brad Bird, was also highly praised by critics

Warner Bros. is Courting Tom Cruise to appear in Clint Eastwood's A STAR IS BORN
Tom Cruise ended 2011 on a high note with Brad Bird’s very successful Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. And he seems to be losing himself in his character in the movie adaptation of the hit musical Rock of Ages. Which is a good sign because the last time he lost himself in his character (Les Grossman), audiences were completely caught off guard.
Now Tom Cruise being courted to appear in Clint Eastwood’s recently revived project A Star is Born. According to Deadline, Warner Bros wants Cruise to appear as the lead in Eastwood’s movie about “an over the hill musician who helps launch the star of an ingénue he falls in love with. Variety says that there are no formal negotiations, Just that the movie studio is talking to Cruise.
There are two things to note. First, this is a movie that Eastwood has been working on for quite some time and was ready to shoot before its headline star, Beyonce, got pregnant. Nine months after, the film is a gone once more.
The second thing to consider is that the schedule weighs heavily on Cruise decision to appear in the movie. For one thing, he has to work on Joseph Kosinski’s Oblivion starts shooting next week, with All You Need is Kill to follow. Seeing that Kill is a WB film and Eastwood’s tendency to have fast production shoots, its likely that Star could be shot in between Oblivion and Kill.

Cruise begins shooting Joseph Kosinski's untitled sci-fi pic next week for Universal before segueing from that into Doug Liman's "All You Need Is Kill" at Warners.
